Is anyone else finding that despite target having the set in stock they are refusing to sell it until September 3rd?
I saw that mentioned one other place - another post here maybe? Otherwise, I've not heard of that. Someone at Target is misinformed unfortunately. I just ordered mine form Target online rather than chase after it locally and had it by the end of the week it released.

I purchased one as a birthday gift for a friend who is also a new DM three weeks ago without any problem. Had to have it shipped as the closest one was four hours away but I received it exactly on time.
no problems here...local target said it was out of stock but i happened to be there and looked anyway...as I rounded the corner, the lights dimmed and a spotlight shown down upon one remaining box. I shoved two little disabled kids out of the way and grabbed it, screaming with joy.
Apparently Target online will say out of stock if there's 2 or less of the item remaining on the shelf.
edit: i bought this weeks ago before the 'Target won't let them out of the stores' issue.
The issue I had was after hunting down the essentials kit on target.com and doing my pre-order they sent me to a canadian retailer that cannot send it to me until September, this has now been fixed for new canadian orders but the cost of shipping it from the USA to Canada is about $36.00 added to the price so I am sticking to my original purchase with $8.00 shipping. From what I have understood the kit is being handled by Hasbro instead of Wizards of the Coast which is why they did the Target thing. Which sucks big time and I hope that this is resolved for future product releases. I have a limited budget and so I cannot afford the outrageous shipping from USA to Canada and I cannot afford buying the books from FLGS and when I do get an actual book it is usually from Amazon.ca which is usually about half price compared to my one and only FLGS which is happy to gouge buyers. Cannot even run a game in the store unless you bought your books from there.
‘Gouging’ is largely the cost of running a physical store with employees.. They can’t sell books with no profit margin AND stay in business. It’s either pay the extra to help them stay open and provide you with a place to play....or buy everything online and play at home in the mirror.
This explains a lot. I had a lot of trouble getting ahold of the Essentials Kit. I think it was just a week after it's release, it was sold out everywhere. I gave up after 3 stores told me they couldn't locate their stock or could even tell if they got a shipment to begin with. Called back a week later and found a single copy in my local Target. I was going to just order it online but got very lucky. A friend who lives a little further away from me could not find a copy at all despite calling every week for the entire release month to check if it had shipped. I guess they can't even order it online now that they've restricted release to 9/3.

No, not at all.
It took me a while to find a Target that had it in stock, but they were happy to sell it to me once I did.

Oh hey, just happened across a reddit thread about this issue. https://www.reddit.com/r/dndnext/comments/cn7xkv/target_refusing_to_sell_the_dnd_essentials_box/
