Hey so I've loved watching critical role content for a while now, but the long run times makes it daunting when trying to catch up. I've been on episode 15 for a while now, so you can see how I've been slacking. I kinda just want to be apart of the experience of tuning in while they are streaming on Thursdays. My question is, in your opinion, should I watch the recaps and summaries to get up to date, or should I just try to watch them all in full length.
It's entirely up to you. There will be value lost by reading the summaries and watching the recaps, but if that's necessary for you to get caught up then by all means.
For myself, I opted to listen to the podcasts while I am at work or exercising. There's still some value lost by not including the visual element of the show, but for my purposes the faster pace was worth it.
Depending how much you watch per week there can be advantages of being behind. Last summer I got into critical role and started campaign 2 from the beginning. Watching when I wanted and how much I wanted watching a little under two episodes a week I caught up a couple of weeks ago and I am missing being able to watch whenever I want but have to wait for the next episode to come out. I am wondering whether to start campaign 1 and did watch the first episode but the more recent programs are much better produced (better sound quality, models for the battle scenes etc).
If you do find the programs to long you can skip bits, I do usually skip through the interval which does reduce the run time quite a bit.
Living in the UK I am never going to have the advantage of watching live however (it starts at 3am my time)
I love watching live, chatting with people in the chat and on Discord, reacting to things as they come. But yea, the games can be long and go late. My suggestion is to do what feels right for you, and don't feel like you MUST watch a certain way or HAVE to do it consistently. Maybe one week you catch the whole episode, but miss a week and get the recap. Maybe you watch half the episode live and pick up the second half over the weekend. Perhaps the podcasts are perfect for you to keep up with.
If you are trying to catch up so you can jump into the next episode live, then I will offer the advice I give to anyone who wants to start enjoying a D&D show or podcast with a backlog...just jump into the most recent episode. MOST shows (CR included) include a basic recap at the beginning. If you are ok with being a bit lost in exchange for joining in live, then just jump in! You can always spend you time and go back afterwards.
Next live episode is July 11th, so you have two weeks to enjoy some episodes in whatever variety you desire. But unless you LIKE doing a deep hard binge, I suggest just enjoying what you can in quantities that aren't going to make you nuts, watch a few recaps, and join us on the 11th for the latest episode of Sam makes a funny hashtag Critical Role!

One can also increase the playback speed on YouTube and Twitch VoDs up to 2X.

I binged it for 5 months from 0 to 67. I just watched 68 & 69 live and I couldn't be happier. It's a commitment tho. Liek for realz
