i was making a game seperate from d&d and i was wondering if i was allowed to use certain races and monsters from d&d. like for example: eladrin, aarakocra and illithid. will i get into legal trouble if i use these in my game, or are they all free to use without any copywrites to deal with?
Anything that is available in the Basic Rules document is free to use however you want. Everything else is not and would require some sort of licensing agreement.

I think that anything in the Systems Reference Document is free to use when making a D&D 5e product.
1. The Basic Rules contains stuff not covered by the Open Gaming License
2. I think the SRD only provisions for the use of making 5e products.
@gaisterson I would avoid using anything from D&D in a non-D&D game. The stuff you quoted are certainly D&D properties.

Arguably, you can just do what everyone else in media does and rename those things.
