The current wording of the spell works great if you're playing out social encounters on a grid or as theatre of the mind (as every game I've played or seen played has).

I think you need to work on your comprehension skills. I clearly said I made an assumption that you usually address people in front of you. I also said how my group plays. As far as I'm concerned the range on this spell makes sense from both a mechanical point of view and a practical point of view.
