DISCLAIMER: This is pokemon. I want people who are familiar with pokemon here.
So my friend started running a campaign in a setting of his own. It was mostly like the normal d&d world, but talking pokemon densely inhabit a specific continent (HE HASN'T NAMED IT YET). He wanted me to ask for some advice on how this could work. We have an air genasi ranger and myself, Jean Simon the Obstagoon bardbarian. Could we have some advice on how this setting could work? Thanks in advance!
Maybe just mechanics or society considering Pokémon is family friendly so they are “knocked out” but this is d&d so death is very real and common. Also what about some Pokémon having Pokédex entries that straight up say they eat other Pokémon?
I'm pretty sure in some of the original pokemon manga they actually killed each other (pokemon and trainers) during battles. Maybe go back to those and draw inspiration from it.
Pokemon may just be knocked out in battle, but they can still die. (just think of the Pokemon Tower in Lavender Town, it's full with the graves of beloved pokemon)
There are even a few ghost pokemon which originate from dead people, or at least their spirits. (examples: Phantump, Yamask, Pumpkaboo)
No. It's just that on this continent pokemon are some of the only intelligent races. But other creatures like kobolds and goblins though rare are still around.

Are we talking a Pokemon mystery dungeon type setting?
Kinda except it’s still in a d&d style world and this continent is so isolated it might as well be another plane of existence.
What kind of advice are you hoping to get?

Since the target audience are children, death is downplayed, but no less a normal part of that world.

Our rule for ghost type pokemon is when they die they discorporate and their soul is destroyed.
so would pokemon be the only living thing other than humans
No. It's just that on this continent pokemon are some of the only intelligent races. But other creatures like kobolds and goblins though rare are still around.
can you tame kobolds and goblins
No. It's just a world with talking pokemon that happen to be really important on this one content.
ok so would players play as pokemon or pokemon trainers
No. THERE ARE JUST TALKING POKEMON WITH SWORDS/WANDS/WHATEVER WEAPONS THEIR CLASS USES.
ok
Yeah.
