Ursula Cho; comes from a long line of distinguished bullfighters. However, she would rather play music and sing songs than fight bulls - even if it costs her the love of her life. Her days are spent practising her musical talents and dreaming of being joined in wedded bliss to Gai Hwang, the beautiful and charismatic son of a local lord. Gai loves the bullfights, but Ursula can't bring herself to do it, to harm a living creature for sport, money and fame, or even for the affections of Gai.
Gai Hwang is also madly in love with Ursula's little sister Mina.
Mina Cho is a prodigy, perhaps the greatest bullfighter that her clan has ever produced. Her fights are full of beauty and grace and spectacle; she awes the crowd and is beloved by her fans. Becoming so famous at such a young age has made her very arrogant, though, and believes herself to be far superior to everyone else. She barely even notices Gai and his attempts to woo her.
Ursula's love of Gai and Gai's love of Mina is often the cause of many arguments and fights between the sisters. Though in their hearts they still love each other, outwardly they are always at each other's throats.
When a rival clan attacks the village, Mina is the first to volunteer to defend her home. Ursula volunteers as well, but like always she is second to her sister. However; Mina's arrogance and gung-ho attitude get the better of her, and she is gravely wounded. Believing that she is dying, she tries to make peace with her sister, by asking Ursual to sing her favourite song. Thinking that her sister doesn't have much longer to live and not wanting them to part in such sorrow, Ursula nods and starts to sing.
This time, it is not like her usual singing; her words are profound and reflective, full of tears and passion, as though they come from the very core of her soul.
As she sings, something magical happens. Mina's wounds begin to heal at an accelerated rate; soon, she is no longer in danger of dying. Then her wounds are healed completely, and her strength returns to her.
For the first time, Mina sees her sister's real talent, and Ursula realises where her power lies. With her song, she changed the world, at least this tiny part of it. After a brief moment of realisation, in which the two put aside their quarrels and rivalries, Mina returns to the battle - only this time with Ursula as her support. Ursula's songs cast fear and doubt into the heart of the enemy, and bolsters her sister's strength, healing her and making her stronger. Together the pair defeat a significant number of the enemy forces. Efforts that go a long way to saving the village and their clan from being wiped out.
When the battle is over, Mina receives praise for helping to defend her people. Mina always receives recognition for everything that she does, but this time, she doesn't hog the spotlight. This time, she willingly shares it with Ursula, knowing that without her sister's gifts, she would have surely died.
Thus, Ursula becomes a folk hero. All the attention is new to Ursula, who has become accustomed to being ignored. Ursula has become accustomed to walking down the street without being noticed, being invisible and not wanted by anyone.
Eventually, her newfound fame gets too much for her, and she decides to leave the village and go off on an adventure. She wants to see the world beyond the walls, so to speak, to meet new people who don't know of her status as a folk hero. She wants to meet people who will be her friends because they like her as a person, not because of what she did. She also wants to discover new sounds and new songs to add to her repertoire.
So, what do you think? Would you play a character like Ursula? Also; if somebody played this character in a game where you were a player or a DM, do you think she would be interesting to have as a member of the party?
As always, thoughts, opinions and constructive criticisms and ideas on how to improve the character are welcome.
