So I was burned out for a while on roleplaying but I feel the urge coming back stronger than ever now. I want to start sitting in the Game master's seat and my friend told me D&D is quite fun and easy to play. I've always loved the D&D Bioware games for their setting and world. So I want to get into this. So he tells me that if I want to DM I should get at least the 3 core rulebooks. But people online are telling me to just get the PHB and the monster manual because that is all you need to play the game. He says you can do that but you would really need to be running premade adventures. So I need some opinions. Should I get all 3 books and make my own adventures or should i just get the 2 and get a couple cheaper adventures to run? I'm excited to play and i really want my friends to enjoy themselves. I am on somewhat of a budget but I can afford all 3 rulebooks soon but not much after that when it comes to fun.
I’d recommend the new “Essentials Kit” for starters. I’ve been running through it with my group and have found it to be laid out fairly well. With the physical box, you also get an unlock code for the DNDBeyond content!
Yeah the Essentials Kit is pretty good. It has everything you'll need to run the standalone campaign that is included. There is a code in the box that includes a continuation to the adventures started in the Essentials Kit if you want to continue it. However, that will require you to get the Players handbook, Monster Manual, and the Dungeon Masters Guide. It's a rather cheap way to get you started though so it's a good way to see if it's for you.
