A comprehensive answer by @MellieDM:
D&D Beyond provides all of the content Wizards of the Coast offers for free including the Basic Rules, SRD, and Elemental Evil player's companion. In order to access content that Wizards of the Coast has released in their source books and adventure modules, you would need to purchase that title in the D&D Beyond marketplace. You can also choose to purchase items piecemeal. If you're just looking for Eldritch knight, for example, you could purchase JUST that subclass. Doing that would also decrease the cost of the book itself. You are also welcome to use the built in homebrew tools to enter in content based on physical books you own -- just do not publish content you did not originate.
D&D Beyond is run by Curse, which is owned by Fandom. D&D is made by Wizards of the Coast, which is owned by Hasbro. They're totally separate companies. There's no way to register the physical books on D&D Beyond. (Only the new Essentials Kit comes with a code to redeem the adventure on D&D Beyond (as well as 3 digital-exclusive adventures by WotC folks, unlocked with the same code), as well as a 50% off code for the PHB on D&D Beyond.) To quote a mod, @Conn Eremon:
Conn Eremon - 08/08/2019 Unfortunately, D&D books don't have unique identifiers that allow anyone to verify purchase. As D&D Beyond is a vendor, not the same entity as Wizards of the Coast, the option is simply not there. That said, certain future products will have codes that will enable the product to be unlocked on D&D Beyond. Currently, there is the D&D Essentials Kit available at North American Target stores. It will be released globally in September. You do have options available as an alternative. If there is only a specific element that you wish to use, such as a subclass, a race, a magic item, etc, you can purchase them individually at greatly reduced cost. Each time you purchase a piece, the whole book decreases in price by the amount paid. Additionally, the homebrew tools are free to all users, and can be used to recreate nearly all elements of the physical books.
If I own the physical copy of the Player's Handbook, is there any way to obtain the digital version on here for free?
No, there isn't.

Is there anything prior to 2022?
Is there anything what exactly?
