That is true. Essentials kit is the first WotC product that I know of that gave a key for the corresponding digital content on DnDB. It may be standard going forward, but it isn’t being done for anything previous.
The Essentials Kit comes with a digital code for its content, as well as a code for 50% off of the PHB. The Starter Kit comes with no such codes. Your options are to either buy the LMoP adventure here, or run it from the book you already own.

The starter kit pre-dates D&D beyond. To my knowledge a code for LMOP was never included or advertised.

I bought the Starter Set. It didn't come with a redeemable key or anything like that.
