As the spell reads, it seems to only effect one creature or object at a time, so arguably it would not be able to capture or protect multiple things at once. However, depending on how your DM wants to play it, I could see a case for two medium sized creatures/objects that are very close together to be caught up in the spell effect area.
Also, medium sized creatures take up a 5ft square while a large creature fills a 10ft square, so technically four medium creatures equals the space of a large creature.
Since it says "creature or object" I would say that if the caster casts this spell on them self then the other players would need to be as close as possible to the caster. You could probably achieve this (if using miniatures) by placing a large base with the caster at the center and then having the other players try to fit on the base as well. This could give you a good idea as to how effective the spell could be and maybe even offer a chance for an enemies attack to still somewhat work if, for example, one player's leg is still outside the sphere.
Can a party wizard cover themselves as well as another player in a Resilient sphere?
It states "A sphere of shimmering force encloses a creature or object of Large size or smaller within range." do two medium players make a large?

You could maybe:
However, an area on the ground is not considered an "object".

Full of rice, beans, and bad ideas.
RAW, no. The 2 creatures in a large object solution MattV mentioned works. You can always ask DM.
Also if they are occupying the space (example: a PC mounted on a wildshaped druid).
I wouldn't disallow a mount and rider, but I'm not sure it is strictly RAW.
