Why in gods name do we have to purchase the sourcebooks again for dnd beyond.... i own 90% of all the sourcebooks and it seems a bit ridiculous that I have to repurchase every book i want to use on this website.... Why would you wizards of the coast not allow a way to input the serial number or something like that into your account and unlock the ability to use each one you purchased.... This seems like a cash grab with an easy fix....
This issue has been discussed at length, ad nauseum.
The tl;dr is that DDB is not WotC, they're another distributor (like a gaming store) that has their own overheads and costs. They offer a service and distribution platform that is independent of WotC.
DDB came into existence long after 5e started and wasn't part of WotC's initial business model, hence no codes. Also, none of the money you paid for your physical book goes to DDB, it goes to your gaming store, who uses it to pay back the stocking costs that went to the distribution company, who bought the stock from WotC.
The money you give to DDB goes to pay for the license they pay to WotC to distribute the content, as well as pay for staff, tool development, AWS server hosting (there are over 2 million characters in their system currently alone).
It is like buying the same videogame on both Playstation and Xbox. Yes, you've bought it elsewhere, but where you are buying it from now wants their slice of the pie. Welcome to the digital age where you pay for the service, not something physical :-)
Well thats unfortunate as hell ill say... i was excited to use this but there is no way.... be almost 700$ to get the sourcebooks and material i have on here... Seems like wizards could do something about that... its their license so if they wanted they could fix that.... the membership fees alone could cover that money,,,, greedy people making money off nerds for using material theyve already bought.... just seems like a sham IMO
You know you can pick and choose what you want from the books when you buy them digitally here. You only want the sub classes from Swords of the Coast, you can do that. Only want new playable races from Ebron, you can do that, ect.
Ya it's a total sham dude, it hasn't helped anyone trying to get into the game who wasn't someone that bought all the books and isn't all to keen on keeping dozens of books around there house and opening them up to took through them all whenever they want to make a character and liked having an easy to use and legal character builder
Oh wait

The total cost of the Legendary at full price is roughly $600. With the current coupon codes you can get every book currently published for around $400. It’s quite a savings over physical and a lot less than the $700 you thought you’d need to spend either way.
You can also homebrew all the content from the books into DDB yourself for free for personal use.
That’s how I started until I added official content here and there. I love using Beyond and definitely believe in the platform. I’m switching everything over to digital.
Im glad im not the only one who feels this way... I decided to check it out after years of watchin WEB DM and my jaw dropped when i seen the price tag.... save 25% and its still 700$ nearly.... like wtf is that.... crit fail marketing roll...

That's only if you want to buy literally everything, which you don't need to do. DDB offers something the books can never offer; piecemeal purchasing. You play a human divination wizard? Cool, you just need to buy the divination subclass for $2. And that's $2 credit towards buying the PHB.

You keep repeating that, but I've already corrected you. I'm absolutely positive at this point you have not even looked at the market place nor looked at the offerings for sale provided by DDB at this point. Quit reiterating a false statement after being corrected, dude.
If Wotc has given dndbeyond the rights to sell their material digitally then its only fair moving forward they put codes in new material to redeem online as they did with the essentials kit.

dndbeyond is not the only digital seller
roll20, and fantasy grounds are also digital sellers

They'd have to pay dndbeyond to do that, and that would raise the price of the books

Anyone else agree or have any opinions?
I don't know if anyone else pointed this out yet, but...
DDB is not owned, operated, or otherwise part of WotC. DDB is a distributor, same as the store you bought the physical book from.
Books do not have unique serial codes, they can be googled (PHB: 9780786965601).
Any new product that has a unique code inside it has to be a sealed product that can't be opened before purchase and costs more to produce. And since it is redeemable for a separate service would have to also include the cost to pay the service providers. Physical books that came with codes for DDB would cost 5-10$ more.
DDB is not the only online licence distributor for 5e, what about them?
Finally there are all the ways for someone to make a character on DDB without having to buy a single whole book.
And of course all of the above has been mentioned, discussed, and repeated many, many times on several different threads across multiple subforums on DDB. It is very easy to find.
All my 2nd edition books are worthless now other than for scaring my players when i slap the fiend folio on the table. Personally I just got back into dnd after many years. I find this resource to be awesome. On another note I found API’s for phb and mm online for free. I built complete digital spell books and was working on a character builder when I found dndb

Buy the pieces you want to use as you want to use it.

You don't. That's it.
If you want both a hardcovera a paperback of the same book, oh no! you have to buy it twice! *wrings hands* Poor you!
dndbeyond is not the only digital seller
roll20, and fantasy grounds are also digital sellers
People seem to assume that they're being forced to buy the hardcovers for some reason
They'd have to pay dndbeyond to do that, and that would raise the price of the books
