I'd like to run a character that makes use of the light/heavy crossbow, but doesn't take the crossbow expert feat.
For the first 4 levels are fine. However after level 5 I run into the Loading mechanic:
"Loading. Because of the time required to load this weapon, you can fire only one piece of ammunition from it when you use an action, bonus action, or reaction to fire it, regardless of the number of attacks you can normally make."
Now I'm wondering. Can I take Beast Master at level 3 and solve this problem with the Ranger's Companion feature? Specifically the following part.
"...Once you have the Extra Attack feature, you can make one weapon attack yourself when you command the beast to take the Attack action."

As a DM, I would allow that. You are only attacking once and your beast companion is making use of your Extra Attack once you reach 5th level.
Yeah that works. The loading property doesn't take away your extra attack, just makes you unable to attack with a crossbow with it.
