I have an idea about a BBEG who is collecting the essence/power of the gods. What is an item that would be strong enough to hold them and what might be some good ideas?
My BBEG is going to be almost ancient and the reason for collecting these items will not be what my players will expect.
The initial reason for this was that the BBEG would just be a father who wanted to bring the world to his son who is about to die.. with disregard to the consequences of what he was doing.
The eggshell of the first dragon, meticulously collected and pieced back together, sealed with sap from the World Tree, and bound by the hair of Atlas.

Canto alla vita alla sua bellezza ad ogni sua ferita ogni sua carezza!
I sing to life and to its tragic beauty To pain and to strife, but all that dances through me The rise and the fall, I've lived through it all!
In 4e, the primordial Mual-Tar was imprisoned by a set of chains forged by Moradin. Since primordials and gods are on similar power levels in 4e, something like that might work. You can find some pretty neat artwork depicting Mual-Tar on the web.

A beefed up version of the Iron Flask? The Iron version can hold Solars, so just make it a steel flask or something.

This is close to what you are looking for....Maybe shards of it would be good for what you need.

You could use the minimus containment option of imprisonment like the evil containment wave.
The cup of a bigger god
I would imagine that, to hold a god or their power, such an item would almost certainly require the assistance of another god to be created.
