In the game I'm running (a post apocalypse) one of the farms that supplies the area is under control of a druid. He uses his spells for the day using plant growth to make the plants grow enough to harvest at least once a week. Enriching the land with the spell as well.

Now, one of my players wants to make sure the food supply is taken care of with the approach of winter and is arguing that having the druid use Druidcraft would work and that spellslots wouldn't have to be used.

Maybe I'm missing something about the spell but Druidcraft seems to only start a seeds growth in this context. Not make it grow more and more with each cast.

Am I missing something? 

Yea the only applicable thing in Druidcraft is "You instantly make a flower blossom, a seed pod open, or a leaf bud bloom" and that's not exactly helpful for the production on a farm - certainly not large-scale. It's 6 seconds per plant/seed.

It's a cantrip and should be treated as such. You had it right that Plant Growth is what is needed (at least).

Indeed, it can make a seed pod open, it doesn't say to grow faster.
