Ok, let's revive this cause I'm making my version of Conan.
Vhuman- took Fighter Adept and picked up TWF (Conan in Howard's original was frequently using long knives or short swords).
Str 16 Dex 13 Con 14 Int 8 Wis 12 Cha 12
2 Barbarian/3 Rogue Swashbuckler (pirate days)/X Battlemaster Fighter. Honestly, I'd like to grab Totem because Conan was particularly tough, but if I take 3, why not take 4 for the ASI and 5 for Extra Attack? That's just too much Barb IMHO. Swashbucklers are bold and brash but also can be sneaky by their Rogue nature. Fighter is pretty obvious. Lots have argued for Champion, to maybe crit fish (which is a trap), but Battlemaster seems more like the natural fit. I'm also tempted to just not go fighter at all and keep going in Rogue to get Evasion and higher Sneak Attack dice. But FIghter gives so much as well. All those juicy attacks, Action Surge, ASIs, Manuvers, etc.
Alert is a great feat, as is Lucky, but getting Str, Dex, and Con up high is honestly more important to me once I get alert.
My version of Conan the Barbarian planned out for 5e (sacrifices had to be made - LOL). IMO, you don't need anything but Barbarian for the Howard original. It helped that our DM gave us a Feat (for free) without having to choose Variant Human. Also, none of this is with downtime additions which could (more proficiencies) make this even better. Some of that which is listed isn't a choice, but of course help the build:
Level - Features 1 - Point Buy: STR 15, DEX 13, CON 14, INT 9, WIS 10, CHA 11; Human: STR 16, DEX 14, CON 15, INT 10, WIS 11, CHA 12; Proficiency: Athletics, Intimidation; Pirate: Stealth, Bad Reputation, Navigator's Tools, Water Vehicles; DM Bonus Starting Feat: Resilient DEX 15 w/Save Proficiency (so nice with Barbarian Rage ADV on seen effects) 2 - Reckless Attack, Danger Sense 3 - Path of the Totem: Bear Spirit 4 - ASI: STR 18 5 - Extra Attack, Fast Movement 6 - Aspect of the Beast: Tiger Spirit (Acrobatics, Survival) 7 - Feral Instinct 8 - ASI: DEX 16, CON 16 9 - Brutal Critical 10 - Spirit Walker 11 - Relentless Rage 12 - ASI: STR 20 13 - Brutal Critical (2 dice) 14 - Totemic Attunement: Elk Spirit (BA knock prone & dmg) 15 - Persistent Rage 16 - ASI: CON 18 17 - Brutal Critical (3 dice) 18 - Indomitable Might 19 - ASI: Skill Expert: WIS 12, Athletics Expert (insane at this level), Animal Handling (or Sleight of Hand) Prof 20 - Primal Champion: STR 24, CON 22
