I started off playing AD&D decades ago. Now I see there are so many different editions, I wonder if there are some that are preferred and others that are generally despised.
I personally find that Pathfinder and 5th Ed seem to be the most popular. PF for those who love lots of mechanics to customize everything to the nth degree, 5th for more casual play.

Who’s playing which editions?
Mostly everyone is playing 5E now.
There's still a few people playing earlier editions as well.
On this site, in particular, you're answer is overwhelmingly going to be 5e... because that's the only edition this site supports.
WOTC lies. We know that WOTC lies. WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. We know that WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. And still they lie.
Because of the above (a paraphrase from Orwell) I no longer post to the forums -- PM me if you need help or anything.
5e
But some people still play 3.5...and most try to forget 4e.
I never played 4e because it didn't look like the AD&D I played (1e/2e). Now that I am deeper into 5e I really love it, just so many improvements.
5E did a lot to cut down on the unfun stuff, while still adding new fun things, without making it more complex than need be.
There's a fan project to overhaul 4E, because I feel it got a lot of undue criticism I'm excited and hope it finishes and want to try it out.
