I'm sorry if this has been discussed before, however I couldn't find anything in the rules nor the forum. My Bard character has had his spell focus Lute destroyed in a recent encounter and I was wondering how some GM's treat finding another Musical instrument spell focus. There is Druidic and Sorcerer/wizard type focusses in the inventory list. Also religious symbols for the cleric and paladin are also in the inventory list.
So how to go about finding my bard a new musical instrument that is also a spell focus?
Is it an old instrument , that you spend a short rest with? Does that make it a focus?
Is it s special instrument maybe sold by a special vendor in a major city for example?
Just wondering how other people would treat this , or maybe I've missed some information out there. Thank you
A Bard can use any musical instrument as a spell focus. It doesn't have to be a special instrument, it can be any old instrument. Thematically it probably makes more sense for the Bard to be proficient with said instrument, but I don't think that's even necessary.

Canto alla vita alla sua bellezza ad ogni sua ferita ogni sua carezza!
I sing to life and to its tragic beauty To pain and to strife, but all that dances through me The rise and the fall, I've lived through it all!
As Ophidimancer says, literally any musical instrument will work. As long as they had a hand free to do it, I would let a bard drum on their own leg to cast a spell. Heck, a singing voice Is a musical instrument, and they don’t need a free hand to do that. Be careful with that one though, there’s certainly room for not interpreting “voice” as overriding the general material component rule requiring a free hand.
