I just wanted to make a small introduction. July of 1986 I created my first character using the Gary Gygax books... I still have those books today.. I was 13 at the time.. I am now 47 and currently play ver 3.5 every saturday night.. . I am interested in playing 5e but my current group is deadset on 3.5 and they have good reason.. mainly due to the fact we have spent a lot of money buying many 3.5 books.. however I myself am interested in possibly joining a group to play 5e. I find using google duo to be a good way to play with other people. That is how we currently play in my 3.5 group... Keep in mind I would be new to 5e and even though I have been playing D&D since 1986, starting withAdvanced Dungeons & Dragons, Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd Edition, D&D 3, D&D 3.5... I did not care for version 4 (played 3 months in a group). But version 5e I am interested in and have recently bought the 3 main books. I just don't have a group to play with.
I am sure many of you have watched Stranger Things. . Well I am an 80s kid and the part where they are playing D&D.. reminded me of when I played with my friends and in a way, that scene brought back some good memories of me playing back in the 80s. 3 of those same friends I still play D&D 3.5 with to this day. We are grown adults, in our 40s and our children also play and it is awesome to see how strong D&D has gotten over the years, thanks to social media, YouTube and more.
Anyway, I am so glad to see D&D going strong and occasionally I'll walk over to my book shelf and pull out one my Gary Gygax books and thumb through it, or get out one of my old character sheets from the 80s and reminisce of those amazing memories I made playing this fine game of lore, adventure and creative minds.
My Paladine guide your ways and may Takhisis be sealed in the Abyss...
It is fine. If you are looking for a game, we have fora here that can help you find a game. I recommend reading many of the posts here on D&D beyond. I will help you learn the details of how D&D has changed from earlier versions. If you are looking for a face-to-face game they have advertising boards for that too. But right now folks are playing on Roll20, Discord and other online groups. Somewhere out there is a group where you would fit in just fine. And if you don't know it, D&D has become mainstream enough to have numerous Youtube channels dedicated to the game. Good luck and enjoy.

I started playing back in the late 70's when it was first released and like you, I still have my original boxed set along with many of the other editions. I did not care for 4e but I am enjoying 5e so far. It is working well and am currently playing on roll20 and discord with my kids out of state every sat night. There are alot of videos out there on YouTube discussing platforms on how to play online along with some good tutorials on the new 5th edition. This pandemic has really opened some doors, unfortunately, but provides an excuse to play D & D which has been a good thing with these stay at home orders in place.
Current technology has really helped with letting this take place. Roll20 is a good place to find some games to join in on where they welcome walk-ins to their gaming sessions.
Good luck!
