This is purely hypothetical, but can you play a halfling/gnome/dwarf/other small race beast master ranger and say if it's a boar, donkey, mastiff, etc--can you use it as a mount as well as a companion?
Mostly I'm just really enjoying the thought of all the most serious scenes of Princess Mononoke, only riding around on a smallish pig buddy instead of my big majestic wolf siblings.
Also, regardless of beast, consider paying (when you can afford it) for the spell "Awaken".
Once your beast is intelligent, then "While you're mounted, you have two options. You can either control the mount or allow it to act independently. Intelligent creatures, such as dragons, act independently. "
Offer it a share of your treasure (it is intelligent). It can buy better food (And armor, though it might not want to if it flys - weight), and other things.
It's basically the major way people play the Beastmaster. The rules as written make it pretty weak unless you are either mounted or the beast is intelligent.
