I don't post normally, but I saw this and immediately thought of something. What if once you reach a certain level, especially with the PHB subclasses you could cast the first level spells of your chosen School without having them prepared.
If we take everything OP said at face value this addresses a lot of things. Underwhelming subclass features? Not enough core abilities for wizards to look forward to? Giving your wizard access to most of their utility spells that are relevant to their subclass without letting them have access to every 9th level spell at once?
Obviously, play testing required, and different sub classes would get more out of this than others. Plus what do other wizard subclasses get access to if they aren't associated with a specific School? In particular I have to wonder about the dunamancy subclasses from The wildemount book. They're really just aren't very many dunamancy spells.
Wizards already have the ability to cast ritual spells without preparing them, an ability no other class gets. They really don't need the option to cast even more spells without prepping them.

"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
Yeah, no. Clerics can as well, and several other classes. I don't know EXACTLY which ones off the top of my head, but I double checked cleric to make sure I wasn't going crazy. That said, I was presenting that as an idea for the OP and those of similar mind. If you like wizards as is, or think they're already OP, then that idea was literally not meant for you.

Other classes that have ritual caster can cast the spell as a ritual as long as they prepare the spell. Wizards can ritual cast any ritual spell as long as it's in their book, prepared or not
text from cleric class for example:
Ritual Casting
You can cast a Cleric spell as a ritual if that spell has the ritual tag and you have the spell prepared.
Yeah, it's a very important distinction. A wizard does not need to prepare Water Breathing, Detect Magic, or Identify as long as they have the spell in their spell book. A cleric, druid, or artificer actually has to devote one of their prep slots to the spell.
