So, brave adventurers... A character idea has been floating around in my head for a while, but I'm still not sure how to execute it. Basically, the character was saved by a Mimic sometime in their life, and have been traveling companions ever sense (the pc providing the Mimic w/ transportation & drink, and the Mimic providing the pc with extra protection (think a bodyguard/backup)).
What race(s) & class(es) would be down for being saved by; friends with; and carrying around a Mimic?
For race please try to stick with what's listed here (but if you need to suggest others). Here's a link to the races available: https://www.dndbeyond.com/races
I'm finding that the question has nothing to do with class or heritage but circumstance.
I keep mentioning that D&D stories tend to be about the exceptions to normal lore. A person raised in an obstinate culture to hate "monsters" could still become friends with one in the right circumstances. My mind explodes trying to grasp just one possibility stampeding through my brain for each class and culture, but it all comes back to the event that bonded the two together being the more important factor.
As always, be sure to include your DM on this before bringing such a pair to the table.

Human. Male. Possibly. Don't be a divider. My characters' backgrounds are written like instruction manuals rather than stories. My opinion and preferences don't mean you're wrong. I am 99.7603% convinced that the digital dice are messing with me. I roll high when nobody's looking and low when anyone else can see.🎲 “It's a bit early to be thinking about an epitaph. No?” will be my epitaph.
Yeah short answer is any race/class since this is circumstance and personality based. Any companion would require dm buy in and approval.
Personally I could see a changeling with a mimic pet being particularly fun...oh I need to be a noble to attend this party (mimic turns into a cane)
Also, if you/your dm has access to Tasha's there is a cr0 mimic stat block in the dm section of that book that may be an appropriate starting point to homebrew this companion/pet
Thank you for your advice! I almost completely forgot about the Mimic Colony section in TCoE. On that note... (see below) How large (dimensions) would you say that a Juvenile Mimic is? I know that when a regular Mimic is in chest form it is 5ft by 6ft and 5ft tall. What dimensions would you give a Juvenile Mimic?
I don't have a strong answer, I think that if this is for a roleplay pet(rather than a combat companion where scale has direct consequences) Id probably go with top-hat sized. Mostly because a mimic top-hat makes me laugh.
If you are looking for a pet with mechanical consequences, I'd look at using the juvenile mimic as an alternate familiar. A DM may want/need to adjust the familiar rules for a mimic . (off the top of my head allowing the appear as a mundane object instead of summon/store in an alternate dimesion aspect of the spell, or requiring warlock levels and pact of the chain in order to have the mimics special abilities)
Another way to bring the Mimic in as a combat ready companion might be to look at the sidekick rules (I haven't gotten to them in my read through yet so i don't know how easy/hard it would be to make a mimic sidekick)
