I admit, I am completely clueless when it comes to DDB. I've been trying to build/create some characters that would seemingly enjoyable...but I have to ask this: For me to do a class like Artificer (either as a standalone or as a multiclass), do I have to get the digital source or am I missing something? And this question means for all source materials, not just for Eberron. If I want to use something that isn't Core and not homebrew, then why am I allowed to see the class in the game rules but unable to use the class?
I'm not trying to challenge the site, just need clarification for progress, thank you for reading and any help.
If you couldn't see the class you wouldn't know it exists and thus wouldn't be interested in buying it. So yes, if you want to use mechanics other than the basic, essential ones you can use for free you have to buy them on DDB. You can buy piecemeal options (like a single class from the Eberron book), or a number of them from a single book (like all spells from Xanathar's), or an entire book with all the mechanics in it, or a whole bundle of books.

Want to start playing but don't have anyone to play with? You can try these options: [link].
You only have access to the player options from the books you've purchased on this site. So you're pretty much limited to the options from the Basic Rules to start with. And I think you can access the Unearthed Arcana material currently available, by enabling Playtest Content for your character. Beyond that, you have two ways of getting access to more race/class/feat/spell/etc options. You can purchase them yourself, either by purchasing the took that contains them, or in many cases you can purchase invididual items a la carte. The other option is to have your character in a campaign with someone who has a Master Subscription and has enabled Content Sharing. In that case, any of the books that person has purchased on this site can be made available for use by anyone else in the campaign.
The Basic Rules and the spells and races from the Elemental Evil Player's Companion are available free. Any other resources must be purchased separately.

"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
