Roll20 and Fantasy Grounds both work for Mac. They're the two big online players put there. If you visit either site they have looking for group forums for new players looking to find a group. I think Roll20 is easier to get started with.
Most people who play online use FantasyGrounds, Roll20 or do play by post. You can probably find groups to play with on here or on Reddit on r/lfg. I've only played in person, so I can't really give my insight on such things, but I know there are people on here who can.
That is really a personal preference. Are you going to be using this site for the character sheets? Are you going to be running a published adventure or homebrew? I assume you want to spend as little as possible to begin with. You don’t really have to use either of them. You could play using theatre of the mind, which is all abstract. That is really the beauty of this game. It all that you want to make it.
Mac user here. Fantasy Grounds on a mac is an annoyance and should be avoided. It was never fully coded for a mac, but instead is the windows program ran through a program called Wineskin or something like that. You'll have to update, delete, update again, and verify files just to get it to launch and when you do, it doesn't work as well as the PC version. You can't resize the program's window, for example, and any 'pop out' windows from it have to stay within the borders of the program window. This causes a lot of stacking issues. It's really a lot easier to use Roll20. I've seen that there's a lot of workshop content for TTS (TableTopSimulator) that would allow you to play DnD with it, but you would need to know people first because you need to know the name and password to their server to join a game. If you really want to get started with an online group, check these and other forums for DnD, or find one of the RP groups on twitch. A lot of them run community DnD sessions (I'm a DM for such a group).
Thanks, if you have any sessions suitable for a beginner I would be very keen.
I can't speak for other communities, but our community's campaigns/sessions were supposed to be designed so that people could join and leave as they please.

I have used table top simulator before, but it requires a lot of setup and all of the people playing to own a copy of table top simulator.

Edit: I use Roll20.
