So, I am playing a Bugbear, and working exploring the midset on a societal level. It has lead me to an issue.
As a creature with Darkvision, I have Disadvantage in darkness and coulor blind (but no disadvantage) in Low light.
I would like a peice of equipment which emits only low light for a short distance. This would benefit me in conditions when I was up against creatures which lacked dark vision.
A Hooded Lantern with the hood down is five feet of dim light. A Coin of Delving is also five feet of dim light, and vastly easier to pack around than a lantern. Easy to work into a necklace or onto the back of a glove. But it is a magic item, so availability is suspect. There's likely a few others, and there's always Dancing Lights, but for my choice I'd go with the Coin of Delving. Gives you just enough light to attack without disadvantage in melee, which seems to be your intent.
I was hoping for something with a little more range. I was thinking of 15 ft. useful for skulking up on people, or lighting my own camp while withholding even footing to my enemies.
In addition, Bugbears have a 10 ft combat range (not counting halberds). This is what led be down this path to begin with. I am trying to get an understanding of how that would shape their tactics. Especially combined with their racial surprise attack ability.
Any amount of light in total darkness will ruin stealth. Your targets won't see you clearly, but if you've ever been outside in deep nighttime and looked around, you'll know how easy it is for the eye to fasten onto any source of light.
This would be strictly for after combat starts, at which point I'd consider acquiring Dancing Lights. That seems the best way to do what you need done

Anyone know of something that fits the bill?
