Hello! Sifting through the forums is always interesting, but it's also incredibly disheartening when you come to realise that a good 90% of the open games that pique your interest are set at times (in other zones) that would require staying up past 3am just to take part in even a moment of it. So.
Anyone running (or part of) a group and campaign based somewhere in the realm of GMT+5 to GMT+12(or thereabouts)? Honestly, just nailing the timing down seems near-impossible at this point, so I don't want to push it with too many hard-and-fast criteria, but a taste of what I'm looking for....
I'm a new player! I'm excited and enthusiastic, I've genuinely been reading about 5E rules and lore and playing with character creation outside of any actually play for years, so I'm not clueless overall, but I do ask a lot of questions, and everyone play and DM style is different, so there'll be a few blunders on my part I'm sure! You can be direct with me, but you'll need some patience with me as I'm taking a dive into my first ever campaign, thanks.
18+ is an absolute necessity (in my mid-20s, I don't need to be gaming and socialising with minors and minors don't need to be pushed into interacting with me), and 21+ would be highly preferred, if possible!
LGBTQ+ friendly (and I don't just mean 'we slap that on the label but still make jokes and "forget" to use correct pronouns over & over & over again) - I mean, it's June, if you can't even manage it for Pride month, what are you doing?
If racism, colourism or xenophobia trickles into a lot of the campaign story, many of the PCs or, worse still, into ~Out Of Character~ dialogue, miss me with your invitations
Online only! I'm willing to learn to use new sites, apps, extensions & bots to make the process more efficient and enjoyable. I'm on discord daily & while I greatly prefer text I know that can slow things down so would be willing to voice chat (depending on the time of sessions), I'm re-learning the ropes here on DNDBeyond, I've looked at Roll20 a couple times...?
Okay so I do tend to prefer the more a-historical high-fantasy settings, so they'll take priority, but I'm not opposed to other genres and settings.
I approach D&D (in theory so far, but whatever) through the scope of someone who grew up living and breathing books and creative writing. Characterisation, world-building, engaging plots and mini-arcs, digging into the details are all super fun and important and natural to me. I'm a big fan of the roleplaying side of TTRPGs - I'll do some combat because... I mean, you have to eventually, right? But I don't generally rank it as a priority. But exploration, puzzles riddles and investigations also appeal to me - and intimidate me a little too.
Ideally I'd love to work with a DM and other players who.... Yeah, you follow the core rules, but if something's fun, adds flavour, has a reasonable explanation, and can be made consistent from then on, I'd wanna be with people who are happy to bend, break, ignore, or rewrite the rules. As a new player I know that sticking quite close to the rules is probably advisable to give me a solid grounding in 5e, but when the feeling's right you just gotta roll with it, I reckon.
Explicit original homebrew is not a must, but some flexibility and creative freedom to tweak aspects of a particular ancestry, class or sub-class, background, or whatever else, would be much appreciated. You know how sometimes you're re-reading the info for a sub-class and you think 'Yes! This all sounds great, I can totally see this working for my character, it feels like it's all falling into place, except that one thing...'? So I'd just like to be assured that, in discussion with the DM and likely other players, it'd be okay for me to take a few little creative liberties for the sake of narrative coherency for my character, if it ever came up.
Oh look, I told myself I'd make a brief posting, and then this happened. Classic move, really.
TL;DR version: Game: D&D 5e Group preferred: Online (voice & text); 21+; LGBTQ+ friendly Experience: 1 hour-long session as a player; lots of reading and thinking for 5+ years Location/Timezone: ACST/GMT+9.30 - games/other players ideally from GMT+5 to +12 (give or take) Availability: Weeknights can be consistently available between about 8:30pm-12:30am (11am-3pm GMT, for easier conversion). Weekends would have to play by ear. Game style: Semi-casual but reasonably consistent; healthy mix of game elements and play styles to get a taste of it all as a new player - but very interested in the roleplaying side!; classic Faerun, or other historical fantasy settings and vibes would be a huge plus, but not a deal-breaker
Leave a reply if you have a game you think could be a good fit, or if you're a fellow would-be player (or DM) who just can't seem to find a game to join within our (apparently) inconvenient timezones! Honestly? At this point I'd probably settle for just having someone who Gets It who I can gush about new character ideas to. PMs are fine, if you're more comfortable with speaking privately. Discord can be made available on request, but ideally I'd like to have a few messages exchanged on here first.
Thanks for your time, and happy gaming to you all!
