The Greenbottles were a well respected family of halflings. They owned and operated the Harsh Morning Inn outside the North Tune Bardic College of Arts and Wizardry for as long as anyone could remember. A massive building of wood and stone with a thatched roof, the Harsh Morning Inn was the center of all things fun and light hearted. Pictures of hundreds of bards, poets, and magicians were hung on the walls. A thank you from those students of the college that spent their downtime relaxing at the inn and forgetting the worries of a student if only for the time it took to have a mug of Greenbottle Mead and some fresh meat pie. The greenbottle name was a high title for miles and miles around the college. Until Seriphina and Finnan Greenbottle that is.
Seriphina Greenbottle started life as Seriphina Defthands. Many call the family the Thefthands on account of the many unprovable accusations that they were appropriating goods from anyone anywhere that was out of eyesight for even a moment. Phinny as her parents called her when she wasn't in trouble was the first of her family to attend the North Tune Bardic College of Arts and Wizardry against the wishes of her parents. The Defthands had viewed the college and especially the Greebottles as snooty, highbrow, over privileged, and selfish layabouts that hadn't truly worked at anything but drinking and singing to get by. That didn't stop Serifina and Finnan from falling in love. Finnan Greenbottle was thought to be the Greenbottles greatest contribution to the arts and wizardry in the history of the college. High praise given some of the greats that came before him, each hanging their portrait on the walls of Harsh Morning before leaving to spread their arts about the world. Finnan had mastered 3 instruments and a few spells before even entering the college. It was in his 3rd year wizardry class Wand and Arcane Workings that he met Phinny Defthands. The two were inseparable after that first class when Phinny lit Finnans cloak on fire with an ill pointed wand and Finnan flooded the classroom putting it out with an endless skin of wine. The two slid down the stairs in a rush of alcohol and wound up a tangled mess under a judging suit of animated armor that chastised them for the mess and then went for a bucket and mop. The two became the talk of the college. A Greenbottle and a Defthand? What a strange match? But the two did not care.
Lost in each other and their studies they continued to the 5th year of college and their year 5 Wands and Arcane Works class. Finnan was permitted the use of the Wand of Magic Missiles for the lesson and instantly wanted it as his own. He talked about the way it felt that it was meant to be his and that one day he would be great enough to request it from the college. Phinny already thought he was great enough. Late one evening after a meal and drinks in the Harsh Morning, Phinny waited till Finnan slept and decided it was time to use some of the skills her family taught her to give Finnan what he desired. She crept out the window of Harsh Morning and in the window of North Tune. She marveled at the simplicity of the safeguards against theft in the college. It was as if they had never had a thief before. What she did not realize was that the college took a different route to deal with thieves and other undesirables that meant the school harm or to deprive it of one of its many arcane artifacts. Phinny, thinking herself free and clear hid the wand in Finnans bag to be discovered on tomorrows picnic hike through the hills and forests that surrounded the college and slid back into bed.
The next morning during breakfast the High Bard Council from North Tune burst through the door. They were the greatest bards and wizards to ever attend the college. High councilman Steron Longhymn held a small glass disc to his eye and pointed at Finnans bag. "There it is." he said imperiously. He quickly moved to Finnans table where his bag sat next to his leg ready for the hike with Seriphina. "Did you really think you could just take it and leave?" He asked as his eyes locked on Finnan. "Well it is MY bag. I think that implies I can do what I like with it." Finnan mumble around a mouthful of eggs. " What seems to be the trouble High Councilman? What has my bag done to you that you should be so worried about me leaving with it?" "Its not the bag I'm after, boy." With that the councilman flicked his wrist and the bag emptied itself on the table. There sat the wand just as Seriphina was starting down the stairs from their room to the common room. Finnan met Seriphinas eyes as she stopped halfway to the floor. He looked at the wand. Then back to Phinny. She shrugged and mouthed "I love you" as she began to look worried that she had ruined what they had. Finnan looked back to the wand and picked up his mug of Greenbottle Mead as if to take a sip. Instead he showered the High Councilman in mead in a quick toss, snatched the wand and his lute and bolted for the stairs yelling "I love you too!" As they crashed through the stairway window onto the roof of the stables. Leaping down into the driver seat of the high councilman's carriage, they sped away from Harsh Morning. They married at the first church that had not heard the Greenbottle name and have been together ever since.
