Experience: 4+ years as DM Group preferred: Online, but willing to play in-person in the Austin TX area! I'm fully vaccinated. Location/Timezone: Central US (Chicago) Availability: Weeknights after 6 PM CT, some weekend. My job has a rotating late shift, so some weeks I am unavailable at night Preferred role: Player Game style: No style preferences, but want to avoid text-only games. I am also cool with paying to play in most cases.
Hey all, I'm Ryan, I've been a DM for as long as I've played 5e, and while I do enjoy sitting behind the screen, it's also fun to sit in front of it and play as a PC. I have been playing in a friend's game here but would love to play some more. Consider this a job application!
Before getting into why I would be a good player, it's important to clarify that I'm also not someone who would ever be disrespectful or cruel to another player (in-game or out) based on who they are in any capacity. I'm a big fan of doing my part to make a game safe and fun for everyone involved, putting aside that it's simply the right thing to do. You'll never see me getting sweaty on Twitter ranting over a combat wheelchair mechanic.
WHY THIS GUY? - You run your game in a homebrew setting? I live there now! I always make the extra effort to immerse myself in homebrew settings. If you are excited about something you made, I want to be as well! I know what it's like to put a lot of effort into your worldbuilding, and your players should really do their best to celebrate that as well. If you have a wiki or lore dump, I don't care how many pages it is - I'm reading it all and committing it to memory.
- I pride myself on PC knowledge, and I always make sure to know what my character can do. I also try to always know ahead of the rotation what I'll be doing in combat
- If you like to run your games with a more serious tone or don't care for 4th-wall-breaking, I'm your guy. I'm not the kind of person who will name their character after a Hyundai model or "Jeff Rogueman" or anything like that. I think there's plenty of opportunity to have fun while staying totally in-universe.
- While I pride myself on knowing most of the rules, I know that the most important one is that the DM has the final say. No one likes being undermined at the table, and it's rude to do so as a player. If any issues do come up, I'm always willing to talk things over before or after the game - I'm a big advocate that communication can resolve pretty much any issue or misunderstanding at the table.
- I have the opposite of whatever main character syndrome is. I think hogging the spotlight is lame, and I love helping other players live their stories through gameplay. I'm the Virgil to your Dantes! If you want to tell a story, I'll pursue it. If you dangle a hook in front of me, I'll always bite.
- In general, I'm happy just to play the game. I know it can be awkward playing online with strangers in a lot of cases (I'd be lying if I said I didn't get a little anxious typing up this post) but I like to think I'm a good-natured person who is easy to get along with. I know some people like to break ice by teasing others or trying to impress others by flexing their D&D muscles, but that's not me - I'll be cool AND normal. A 2-for-1!
- Not super important, but I've got all the content on DNDBeyond (excluding things not released yet obviously) and have 0 issue setting up a leecher campaign for our group. I am fortunate enough to be able to afford new content, so I'll usually always have newer stuff on pre-order as well.
If any of this reads well, feel free to message me directly on here, reply to this post, or message me below on Discord. I'd love to be at your table!
Hey, the larger campaigns in my server are full at the moment, but we have a West March style game starting in a few weeks if that interests you, as well as 2-4 one shots run a week outside of that. Everything runs in a persistent world, set 1492 DR in the forgotten realms; for the most part the story is homebrew and the world is somewhat canon. You definitely wouldn't be the first forever DM seeking refuge. If your interested add me on Discord Sage#6124
