Game: D&D 5e Group type: Online - Discord, may try VTT but still learning. Experience: New as DM. Location/Timezone: Arizona Time Zone. (no daylight savings) Schedule: Around 6 pm, different weekdays. Roles sought: Players of any level experience. Game style: HOMEBREW WEST MARCH - Hack'n'slash, survival, explore, combat.
A short version... I would like to eventually develop my own homebrew, long-term epic campaign. Problem... lack of experience as a DM, lack of diversity of monsters in my player experience. SOLUTION! I create a homebrew West March style. I know what random encounters will happen, what monsters lie where, and I start to get a feel for challenge ratings and what life is like behind the screen.
What player would this appeal to? Do you want to just go out, sneak around an ambush, explore ruins for lost treasure, kill that wild beast that's hunting people, and then go back to town to collect a bounty? The environment is ruins... a large city-state that has fallen due to cosmic disaster, and is now ruins roamed by various evil creatures. Quests involve picking a route, counting the daylight left, responding to the encounters that happen along the way, and trying to make it back alive. Try to find a way into the collapsed city walls, or explore for bounties and lost ruins. Go across the plains and mountains to get a rare trophy kill of a spotted, vicious beast, or attempt to find the lost library, palace, or other place with valuable relics thought to be long-lost.
New players that have studied their characters are welcome (or are at least willing to spend time on discord before going out). Want to try a new race or class for a few one shots? Have a sense of possible danger/death to excite the game? You can die from going too far. You lose two levels, roll a new character, and have first choice at gathering a party to recover your lost items (if any). I will try to add things for people to hunt for that is of personal value. Cleric of a certain order? Wizard of a certain college? Send some basic backstory and I will try to throw in a lost library, vault, or destroyed temple so there is something of personal value to your character for you to find.
Tool proficiencies and camping will be in effect. Tiny hut can be SUPER useful. Alchemist with supplies can find stuff to make potions. Smithy can find scrap armor to craft with. Cook's utensils? Well-fed group cooks the wolf that went at them, and has dog-kebabs for temp HP. Personal flavor of "know your character and what they do" is the kind of roleplay that will happen and be rewarded.
Not allowed: - No low level flying. - No lineage races (doesn't match environment/theme) - No variant race stats. - No attempting Game-Breaking (you may not have unseen servant walk in front of you to trigger traps, your familiar can't be a second set of eyes that scouts a mile ahead of you... doing these things invoke penalties on the time required to travel, and just assume you aren't the first person to try this and the bandits/beasts are smart enough to anticipate this. I'll allow some to slide, but this doesn't make you ambush/trap immune.) - No artificers (sorry!) - No blood-hunters (also sorry!) - No evil characters or team-betraying. The environment is a place where fugitives are hunted down and bounties are collected. Any thieves are immediately caught and exiled, and everyone going out knows to split gold/rewards evenly, otherwise no one makes it back alive with petty in-fighting. If you get all the gold and nice magic items, and refuse to share with others, DM is going to put his foot down. - No noble background. This isn't the place for a noble's son to secretly earn his knighthood.
EVERYONE! Please message me for the invite or questions. Making sure I respond to everyone while also working from home is alittle difficult and I don't want to miss anyone.
