My name is David, and I am 38 years old. I have not played a tabletop RPG in many years. I am itching to get back to the table soon. My original D&D group just simply dissolved like so many others due to normal life circumstances (jobs, relationships, moving, etc.).
I started playing AD&D 2 Edition in high school. I shared an art class with a senior who was the DM of a long ongoing campaign. At the time, like so many others who came to D&D when they were young, I became enthralled. Justin, the DM of this campaign, was my Matt Mercer. When I watch Critical Role (Matt Mercer), or Acquisitions Incorporated (Chris Perkins), or High Rollers (Mark Hulmes) some of my favorite public and professional DMs, I compare them to him.
I soon became a dungeon master myself. I ran a few campaigns in my post high school years. Then, around the age of 25, I ran a group (consisting of my younger brother and some of his friends, with a few of mine) in an epic saga from 1 to 20 level in D&D 3.5. This was THE campaign. The one that will stick with a person forever. My brother and friends can still recite to this day most of the significant events of that campaign and can tell you the EXACT details about their respective characters. I believe that I am ready to bring this experience to a NEW group of adventures.
What is my goal?
I would guess that for many D&D enthusiasts, Critical Role is an example of what many wish their D&D group could be like and Matt Mercer the DM they wish they had. Playing D&D with a collective group of professional voice actors (who are also close friends) and having a DM with the talents of Mercer is the ultimate dream.
I wish to create a similar, yet more raw (because we’re not professionals), version of this. I want to bring together a group of people with a shared dedication to the game and a desire to help tell an amazing story.
My goals outline
Bring together 5-8 dedicated players who are consistently reliable
Have men and woman at the table (LGBTQ+ Friendly)
Most age categories are welcome and encouraged (sorry children this will be 18+ only)
Persons who are willing to use our experience to work on their acting and story telling abilities
Lighthearted, compassionate, respectful, easy going, open minded
Dedicated to all player characters and NPCs, focused on the game when it’s NOT your turn is a MUST
While playing locally on the kitchen table would be awesome, I find that it is so hard to find a good group this way. I wish to utilize the wizardry of the INTERNET to make finding an amazing play group a reality.
Theatre of the mind style play (if you love minis and tactical combat) this game is probably not for you. Combat will be a major component of the game, however, long drawn-out grid-based combat will not.
Run an epic saga bringing characters from 1 level to 20 I wish to do this in my Homebrew campaign setting (8 Dynasties)
Play 3-6 hours on Fridays starting at 6pm eastern standard time. Other times may be an option
The 8 Dynasties Campaign setting
High Fantasy (wizards & warriors, kings & castles, dragons & dungeons) at this point has a pretty set standard of archetypes that most stories fall into. The 8 dynasties campaign setting will bring you a new set of concepts surrounding many of these core archetypes that people like Tolkien helped pioneer. If you think you know all there is to know about Dwarven culture or Draconic lore, think again! The 8 Dynasties setting will challenge your stereotypical understanding of many of these common creatures or fantasy tropes.

How am I planning on bringing all this together?
The short answer to this is through a series of very calculated and orderly steps which I will outline below.
Firstly, and above all else, I have ZERO experience running an online game. It would be a huge boon to the group to have someone who has proficiency in Online RPG software and play (preferable with a minimum of a +5 proficiency bonus).
Secondly, formation of the group. How is it going to come together?
APPLY to play. I know that many people meet on discord or other platforms, none of which am I familiar with. We are going to do it the old-fashioned way. You’re going to write a handwritten letter and send it with a horse-riding mail carrier. Ok so not that OLD.
We will use E-Mail. If you want to be part of this endeavor.
Please put in the subject line: APPLICATION for ONLINE DND GAME.
Tell me who you are (name, age, etc.)
Provide a brief synopsis of your previous D&D experience. (What editions you’ve played, what do you like, what do you not like, concerns you may have, etc.)
Then depending on the amount of people I get showing interest, I am just going to start pulling random applicants into some form of Zoom; Microsoft Teams; Discord, or whatever I and the person who is going to help me learn the ropes of online D&D decide. I will run a brief half hour adventure/encounter, we’ll do some role playing, dice chucking, story sharing, and maybe a little bull shitting. Hopefully a group kind of just naturally forms as the varying personalities sort themselves out. In the event of too many people applying and only 5-8 slots, I know I might have to do some sort of cut like kids trying out for the basketball team or something. I don’t really have that planned out or what to do in that situation, but I’ll give anyone a shot at the table until a cohesive group comes together. I might run 3-5 little mini session before the actual campaign starts. I don’t really know for sure. I plan on sorting that out as the process evolves.
After this get everyone connected (all the tech and connectivity figured out).
Run a session Zero
Start the campaign.
Other Stuff
We live in a pretty crazy time right now. If you live in America (based on our spoiled little brat lifestyles that most of us live here) it’s politically dicey around here and people can’t seem to get along. I WILL NOT ACCEPT, TOLERATE, ENCOURAGE, DEVISIVE IDEOLOGY AT MY TABLE. If you are a conservative, you ARE WELCOME at my table. If you are a liberal, you ARE WELCOME at my table. If you are religious, you ARE WELCOME at my table. If you are LGBTQ+, you ARE WELCOME at my table. I don’t want to know about your politics, religion, sexual behaviors, or anything else. My fantasy world isn’t planet Earth, and I don’t want to involve earthly concerns in my fantasy entertainment. If you’re an evil bigot towards any of these groups (that includes towards the conservatives for many of you) I wouldn’t even apply to play.
I will absolutely NOT accept this thing called DARK HUMOR Jokes about **** and MURDER are not funny. Please don’t bring that to the game.
While certain evil concepts and acts can be an integral part of a fantasy story, players will not be allowed to play the role of a character who is evil in nature. Simply put, NO EVIL CHARACTERS!
THE AGE OF CONVERGENCE
(side note: dragons in the 8 dynasties setting are very different from what you might think. The idea of chromatic and metallic dragons, one set evil and one set good does not exist)
In the nation of ISPA, a land tormented by dragons for millennia, a treaty (of sorts) between the peoples of Ispa and the dragons was established nearly 2300 years ago. The complexities of the arrangement and how it came to be has been muddled by the sands of time. Now the peoples of Ispa know of no other life than the rulership of the Council of Dragons. And by no means are the people unhappy. Quite the opposite in many regards. The people of Ispa really appreciate the aid of 8 powerful dragons all fighting alongside their army in times of war. In fact, since the formation of the Council just over a thousand years ago, the Ispian nation and its armies have never lost a battle. As a result, their nation is well respected, and feared greatly.
The nation of ISPA and the world of Orterra is about to experience something that has never happened before. This will NOT be a time where scribes write of the repetition of History. No. When the scribes are done writing, the kings are done building, the sands have shifted, and a new age has come, the people, the world, the gods, will remember this time. For its events will be etched in every monument, written in every tome, and sung in every song for eons to come.
What role does your character have to play in these monumental times. Join me in telling the epic tale!
