We am looking to join a D&D 5E group that is open to playing in person or online depending on how busy life gets. I have myself, my best friend and potentially his fiancé interested in playing. As players we are looking to be engaged by the world more than the rules. Critical Role is a great show, but our style is more along the lines of “Not Another DND Podcast”.
Here are some examples of our memorable moments
- Curse of Strahd - the party arrived on a carriage crash scene in the middle of a rainy night. As they inspected the area they hear the wood creek from something heavy on top of the soaked toppled carriage. They turned to see a werewolf lunge at them landing in a muddy puddle that the parties Druid choose to shape water and attempt to freeze its paw. Due to the cool imagery and flavor I gave the werewolf disadvantage on initiative.
-Curse of Strahd - the rogue failed horribly when he attempted to steal a 15’ ft Chain. It slowly clinked, Link by link to the floor as everyone turned and looked at him. He grabbed it and made his escape. He then tried to use it in every situation possible to make his dice flop seem worth it.
- Waterdeep Dragonheist - the party chased a villain into an alley tackling him and wrestling him in a pile of trash. When the city guards showed up the party explained they were starting a niche wrestling genre called “trash wrestling”. This became a popular dive bar event that we repeated a few times over the next year. It gave us practice with the grappling rules.
-Waterdeep Dragonheist - the party met a crazy gnome and decided to play along with it and built a tentative friendship. The party later chose to disguise themselves and steal from him. They later were following someone who looked like they did when they were in disguise and watched the crazy gnome murder the suspected thief and realized how crazy strong their tentative and unstable their tentative gnome friend was. It changed how they spoke to him the rest of the campaign.
- Waterdeep Dragonheist - the party was given a mission to infiltrate a crime syndicate and then insulted one of the key gang members by refusing to sell drugs out of their bar. The gang leader chose to murder their families and tag their homes to make sure they knew not to cross the gang. We laughed IRL because we all ended up with the backstory of “my parents were killed by a big bad evil guy” but now every PC had a similar goal.
