I've DM'ed a couple times before, and I know that there are a lot of players on here who have little to no experience with DnD looking to cut their teeth. I'm looking to start a group of inexperienced players to meet online at least every 2 weeks (preferably every week, depending on availability). The only real pre-requisites is the desire to play and the willingness to commit to show up regularly. I'm more than happy to help walk people through the set-up and use of online tools such as Discord and RollD20 for those unfamiliar.
My preference would be to meet on a weeknight, since it's less likely to conflict with people's weekend plans (committing to give up your Friday or Saturday night indefinitely is a *big* ask) however, I'm flexible so long as everyone can agree. Ideally time would be around 6 or 7 PST.
Your Dungeon Master
I take DMing seriously. I prepare a great deal and work to create a living, breathing world for you to inhabit. I have a background as a Sci-Fi/Fantasy novelist, so I believe in creating a world that exists far beyond the scope of player interaction. I fee that people get the most out of a setting when they get the impression that they are seeing only a small window into a world that moves with or without them; but at the same time that the things they change and create have real and lasting consequences.
I encourage players to take the world and their characters seriously. I encourage humor at the table, but also a sense of reality. Jokes are great... attacking a guard to see what will happen? Well, I guess you'll see what happens. I've DM'ed for a couple of players who wanted to go totally off the rails just to see what would happen, and it wasn't a lot of fun for anyone.
I prefer to say "yes" as much as possible. Come up with a clever idea, and I can guide you through the mechanics and do my best to roll with it, but at the same time every choice has consequences, and the dice are a fickle mistress. I'm not angling for a TPK, but if you don't treat a dangerous world with caution, it's bound to catch up to you, eventually. Heroism is rarely born of the safe path, but it also doesn't suffer fools gladly.
The Players
The style of game I'm looking to run is very character focused. I encourage strong RP and discourage OOC cross-talk. When you're at the table *be* your characters. The action and story of the world and adventure are backdrops for character development. I'm not trying to railroad you from one fight or conversation to the next, I'm building a world and scenarios for you to experience and develop your characters within. Like any good novel, it's not the *things* that happen that really pull you in, it's how those things affect the people involved. Character > Plot.
Part of this will include me reaching out to players via email to help create and develop characters outside the game. I like to tie hooks from character that only you know from your backstory, and to understand the characters motivations so that I can develop the campaign accordingly, and give players that ability to learn about one another at the table. The idea that your characters are all full-fledged adults brought together by chance as adventurers means that you are unlikely to know or trust one another with your entire life story at session 1. In the same way that I think worlds should be larger than what happens in front of the characters, I think that characters should be larger than: "Human Paladin who wants to always do the right thing". If 4 characters congeal off the wall of a tavern at level 1, they should have *some* idea of how they got there. At the same time, it's very possible (probable, even) your idea of your character and their backstory will develop as you play. You don't need every answer at the outset, just a clear sense of beginning; a skeleton with room to flesh out as you develop familiarity with your character.
I usually stay away from models, grids, and maps as much as possible, mostly because I'm a writer, not an artist. I prefer a slightly more abstract measure for distances and sizes, and more descriptive sense of a place. I'd rather let a character try something cool than say, "You're 5 feet too far away to do that". The Rule of Cool is strong. I encourage players to keep maps and notes for their own sake.
The Game
I like to run a game with a flexible tone. I love humor and crazy fun/cool/insane ideas. At the same time, I feel that at times, the game should be dark and serious. PCs can only shine if contrasted with the darkness. I prefer to build worlds where characters feel like heroes because the overcome impossible odds, not because they are inherently superior to everyone around them. I will throw scenarios at you can't win, bad guys who are complex and nuanced, rather than comically *EVIL*, and situations that challenge you to choose between the lesser of two evils. Overcoming a bad guy who defeated you the first time you met him is more rewarding, and few victories come without cost or tie up every issue in a neat little bow.
Conclusion
Obviously, I can get wordy at times and am looking for a very specific sort of player. I hope that the above gives a clear picture of who I am and the the sort of game I'm looking to start. If it piques your interest and you feel like the time/thought commitment is acceptable, then please, reach out via this thread or message me on here. My hope is that we can start in a couple of weeks, to give time to get to know everyone and set up characters.
Hi, I'd totally be interested in joining a game like this. I haven't played before and am new to all the online tools, but have been just making characters up for fun. I watch CR and kinda get how to RP, obviously practice is required, But I like to jump into things with both feet. I'm EST but I pretty much have nothing going on so it shouldn't be hard to find a time, I'm a bit of a night owl anyway. I really like the idea of a world where we'd get to become part of the society instead of just weirdos who come into town, ask very direct questions, buy or steal stuff, and then leave to fight a thing. PM me if you think I'd make a good character for your game.
Hi! I'm pretty new to playing d&d but i have play a bit of pathfinder (a spinoff of d&d) and am quite good at roleplaying, i am a bit young but i don't gremlin. I am open to pretty much any time between 1 pst and 8 pst mon-thurs I love rping.
I'd be interested in this as well. I have played many times, but nothing as regular or intense as an actual campaign and would like to join in if possible. I pretty much have a good knowledge of things so, for the most part, I should be able to handle myself. I should be alright from 8pm central time, but I'm sure I could find a way to work with whatever. Pm me with any thoughts.
I am interested. I used to play 25 years ago so I am a bit out of touch with the newer content but I have a general grasp on the mechanics. I live in Central Time zone and evening is best for me.
Is this a beginning character group?
I have Discord and tabletop simulator but willing to use and learn other engines. Be nice to join a new well-balanced party of 4-6.
I have some ideas on Characters/classes I would like to play and have one nearly complete for a female human cleric. but open depending on what others would like to play I like to play outside the box type characters
I'm interested! Your enthusiasm for rounded characters really caught my eye. I'm an extremely new player/dm and have never played d&d online. Will only be able to make it every other Saturday though. I do have several character concepts in mind!
Also, I have discord; do you plan on playing with VC or chat(text)?
I'm an inexperienced player who would be very interested in joining! I have discord, roll20, and would be willing to use another platform if necessary. I have experience with writing fantasy and science fiction as well, and I would love to get into D&D!
I'm very interested in joining your group. I am inexperienced with D&D, but I really want to dive in in a character driven adventure.
I have a few character backgrounds that I am very interested in fleshing out and playing. I am unavailable Tuesday nights, but any other night would work for me.
What interests me about D&D is the ability to participate in a story and character development, so your goals and style fit what I am looking for perfectly. My inexperience means that you may have to walk me through some of the technical aspects of the game, but I am a quick learner and very open to instruction.
I understand that I may not be what you are looking for or that you may have filled your game. If not, however, I hope to hear from you.
Hi. I'm incredibly new to most tabletop rpgs but am really interested in learning how to play d&d. I've been watching CR and want to get into more intense rp. I'm also very interested in a darker than usual campaign. I can also work my schedule to work with most times during the week. Let me know if you think I'll fit in well
Hello there. I recently lost my DnD group and would be really happy to join an online campaign. I have about 6 years of experience playing a lot of different Systems and love staying in character during a game. I can also bring about 4 years of theatre and voicework to the table. I really hoped that you haven't capped yet as i would love to join in a long term campaign and as a student i have quite the bit of free time on my hands. Hope to hear from you as you sound like an awesome DM.
Hello I am very interested in playing. Ive played several times in real life but it is hard to get together with everyone and I would like to be able to play more regularly.

I do have experience playing with Discord and Roll20.
