High society is sitting pretty and feeling charmed. Cities spread far and wide with most folk not having a care greater than what color chair will match the new curtains. The times when people would have to fight off creatures for the land they wanted to build on is almost a distant memory. Sure, you hear of the occasional pocket of nasties that's come across while the mines expand but they are quickly dispatched and progress continues. Being an "Adventurer" is something that's studied by the most privileged. Although most consider the practice merely acting or role playing there are a select few who are trained in the old ways. It is believed by your teachers that there is supposed to be balance in the world. That all of societies progress is tipping the scales and it's soon to rebound.
The nitty gritty:
Game: D&D 5e Group type: Online / Here / Roll 20 / Discord Experience: Campaign starts at lvl 10. So as long as you can play a character that level but also understand the Dm ****ery that can come with it, you're good :) Location/Timezone: EST Schedule: Sundays at 4pm to 530 ish. (If people need to we can sub some games for different weekend times but that would be a group decision) Roles sought: I like a group of 4 players but if there's stellar character ideas I'm open to 5 or 6 Game style: I like giving the players room to shine while also throwing them challenging situations. Those situations could be baddies you should probably run from to psychological barbs that may have you questioning your character choice. For this campaign it goes from more roleplay and adventuring in the beginning to more combat heavy at the end. (Maybe! Haha!) I give you room to somewhat change that if that's what the party decides
What I'd like to know about you and your character... (Answer here or DM the answers to me)
1. If a beggar met you in a dark remote ally, with nobody around, asking for (what you consider) a little bit of coin what do you do?
2. You walk into a forest and are confronted by an small creature. They say you can only pass if you give them a riddle. What do you do?
3. A god grants you a wish. You can have 10 people who will follow your commands for 1 year or one devoted servant for 10 years? Which do you choose and why?
4. You are about to enter a duel. You are evenly matched with your opponent. Aside from your life, your family estate is on the line. You are offered a poisoned dagger for the duel. Do you take it?
5. Do you have a character, or persona, you've always wanted to play but haven't gotten to yet? Tell me about it.
6. Do you have a persona you love playing? Tell me about it.
7. Any questions for me?
There will be adult themes for some of this campaign and although I may not be completely PC all the time I do not tolerate any kind of discrimination for any reason! Part of me can't believe I have to say that shit is right out, but it's right out! If you've got hang ups seek another campaign!
Thanks for reading! I look forward to meeting the lucky? adventurers :)
*Edit to answer some of the questions:
It is a completely homebrew world. One I've had several campaigns in already and it's undergone a lot of changes over the last 5 or 6 years. There are some elements of it that you may recognize from other published campaigns or books, but honestly at this point I think it would be difficult.
I do have some homebrew rules that you can find by clicking the link in my signature. It is not a full list anymore, so I will get it up to date before we begin. There's nothing so out of line with RAW or Rule of cool that it should be much of an adjustment.
Since this is a well established world it is mostly up to the players to decide to treat it as open world or follow certain plot lines. I do have a main storyline for this campaign with a few sub plots that I would like to see explored because it's the natural progression of this world I've created. (or at least I think it is) I have had campaigns that have done a complete 360 from what I was expecting though and have had to adjust accordingly. With that said if the party decides to mostly stay on track I would expect this campaign to last about 3 or 4 months. As mentioned I have some sub plots and milestones that can be hit along the way, so if at any of those points people feel that's enough and want to stop, that's fine. If the game is going well and everyone wants to continue we will.
Class and race are mostly open as long as you have source material. I do not have source material on DnDbeyond. I personally have pretty much all the source material so I have no problem checking on things or confirming things for the player but in terms of your character sheet here, you will need to own the material unless someone joins the campaign who has it and it's shared.
The only races that may be problematic are some of the creature races and I'd have to assess those individually. So if you're thinking of playing like a Hobgoblin, Owlin, Lizardfolk, etc. message me about it and we'll see what we can do.
A little more about the known world: You will be starting on the continent of Kaaras in the capital city of Nahlone. It is a very prosperous city which houses the continents ruling body. The Council of Seven. It's members representing the 7 major cites. Much has transpired that you would know about and I will get into more detail later but what's most relevant right now is that several generation ago the continent was in chaos and rife with monstrosities. Several famous adventurers over the years have, mostly, rid the continent of any major threats. The will of the Council of Seven being imposed over time to bring peace and prosperity. You, and your party, are a rare group of individuals who are still trained in the old ways. There are still some who believe that peace won't last and that all the "evil" that was destroyed in the past has just left a vacuum for something worse to fill. At the request of your mentors you have been asked to poke around in 2 of the other cites where they believe their growing wealth has been gained through nefarious means.
If a beggar met you in a dark remote ally, with nobody around, asking for (what you consider) a little bit of coin what do you do?
give him a coin and be on my way.
You walk into a forest and are confronted by an small creature. They say you can only pass if you give them a riddle. What do you do?
I think evaluating the odds of winning and turn around and find another path.
A god grants you a wish. You can have 10 people who will follow your commands for 1 year or one devoted servant for 10 years? Which do you choose and why?
One devotee because it is nice to have someone to have your back and have a trusting friend.
You are about to enter a duel. You are evenly matched with your opponent. Aside from your life, your family estate is on the line. You are offered a poisoned dagger for the duel. Do you take it?
Na bro, just do my best, if I lose, I just start a new life.
Do you have a character or persona, you've always wanted to play but haven't gotten to yet? Tell me about it.
I was wanting to play a young and new adventurer, not having much XP but willing to learn and have fun!
Do you have a persona you love playing? Tell me about it
I like to chill and create funny moments with my characters.
Any questions for me?
Are there any class restrictions?
What is the setting?
Are there race restrictions?
Hang Ups? Forgive me I am not familiar with the term, from your last paragraph.
Ello, rather interested what ya offering! Was getting tired of all these low-level ones anyway.
1. Coin, a song and maybe a drink! Depending on how nicely he asks.
2. I love riddles and I'd humour them! Even if I'll struggle a bit with it.
3. 10 people. Large crew gets more attention - which I seek quite often, and being seen with a lot of servants, might attract more!
4. I would, but only if poison isn't lethal and It can't be traced back to me.
5. Honestly, I didn't play enough Self-Smug Bards with secrets. Somebody who is extremely proud of himself, but also has a lot of little dark things behind they otherwise bright and cheerful personality
6. I do now, and he should be very much entertaining! Exact feel of him is not entire known to me just yet. Personality will depend largely on other members of party.
7. A little bit more on the setting that game will take place in? Is it a homebrew world or one of the official? If homebrew - would you mind elaborating on it? Is it a long-term campaign or probably not going to last super long? Is it more open-world or plot-driven type of game? Maybe something in between? And lastly - is there any homebrew rules or bans that I may should be aware of?
Also my discord, in case its hard to reach me here: extinction was#4865
Thank you both for your replies! (And those who messaged me!) Some of your questions I can answer and realize I probably should have included the information in the original post. Some of the answers will depend on the players, your characters and choices. I will add the relevant info to the main post so scroll back up and read the *Edit
Here is a bit about myself, I'm 22 and active military so there may be times I struggle with scheduling but I will be able to let you know ahead of time. I will play basically any class, as I like filling whatever spot the party needs and seeing how the character turns out. I like the idea behind this so I'll give your questions a shot.
1. Depends on if the beggar looks sincere or not, and what the attitude of the character I would be playing is. Typically I would be more than happy to help them.
2. Definitely try to come up with a riddle for them, it could be fun.
3. 1 dedicated person. Being able to properly trust and work with someone beats having a large group of people you don't know.
4. This one is difficult for me as it depends entirely on what personality my character has and the reason behind the duel. If it is based solely on honor and I had no family at the estate than no, i would not accept as it has to be a fair duel. - On the other hand, if I have family at the estate or I was forced into the duel than honor would be out of the question, take the dagger and end it quickly.
5. I would love to play a character who appears to be a fun loving and easly approachable person, but is truly cold and ruthless (Lawful Evil in an all Good party). Did it once and loved it but haven't done it since.
6. I enjoy playing the kind giant, someone who looks intimidating but is very kind to anyone willing to talk to him. Typically go for a paladin or barbarian.
7. Any additional world information/lore would be greatly appreciated. I love world building and listening to the story and settings people create for their worlds.
I will be making the decision on who to invite to the server this Sunday morning the 13th. Some of you may have already gotten messages, some of you will be getting messages over the weekend for some other questions. There is potentially still room in the party so feel free to throw your hat in.
With the messages I've been having with some of the potential players I think the campaign is shaping up well! If you haven't heard from me yet don't panic. I'll be sending out some more messages tonight and tomorrow.
