I am looking for a group to play the new adventure book by Critical Role, Call of the Netherdeep. As someone who has been into DMing for a while now, I 'spoiled' my chance to 'play' as a player in many published adventures by reading almost all the adventure books (of course with the purpose of not just running them but also breaking them down into parts and learning from them, and putting pieces from one in my own homebrew version of another. (Like i took the redbrand hideout from Lost Mines of Phandelver, and put it into my homebrew remix of Dragon of Icespire Peak.).
Before I purchase Call of the Netherdeep' to read through it, learn from it, and use things in it in other adventures, I want to go into that adventure blind, experiencing it first hand as a player.
Thus I am looking for a somewhat experienced DM to run the adventure as well as a few other players to play the adventure with me. i have played a few 3.5 games, but this would be my first time playing a 5e game as a player.
I already have a few character concepts and builds in mind, one of which I call the Fake Wizard. i have been working on this concept for the last few weeks. The Fake Wizard is a spellcaster who pretends to be a wizard and seems to cast wizard-like spells, but is actually not a wizard.
Born to a wealthy Rosohna family that has always had innate spellcasting capabilities from a lineage that is half- Shadar-Kai and half-drow, he has always struggled to tap into the magic that he was born with. So he went to the Marble Tomes Observatory to study magic to become a wizard. However, through all his studies, even though he was able to learn some basic wizard spells, he was never able to grasp the concepts of magic. His attempts to try to cast more complicated spells have even caused some disasters that almost got him killed/and or expelled.
Then one day he comes across this ancient tome of what seems like eldritch magics (maybe it was a forbidden tome that was buried away somewhere at the conservatory and he one day just stumbled upon it, or maybe it was given to him through a black market deal, etc.) , and he secretly moves it his own study room where he spends an inordinate amount of time studying it, and as he does he starts getting visions of entities and creatures in other planes of existence, and as it turns out this tome is: 1. a sentient book that has a mind of it’s own 2. An otherworldly entity is trapped within the pages of the book. He makes a pact with the book or entity within it and becomes a warlock who pretends he is a wizard. One example of how he manages to do that is that one of his mainstay abilities is the cantrip Eldritch Blast, but instead of coming out of his hands like beams or arc of eldritch energy, it comes out as bolts of electrical energy, even though it does force damage, not lightning damage. His patron sends him out on a journey to: 1. (if a sentient book) find a way to find a body for the sentient entity in the tome, or 2. (if it is an otherworldly entity trapped within the pages of tome) find a way to free his patron from the book’s bindings.
I am planning to build this character (with a DM's approval) as hexblade warlock (until level 5) and shadow sorcerer. I could also build it as a straight warlock (and non-hexblade) if needed, but not really ideal for the character concept.
Again, I am looking for a DM to run this adventure for me and a few players to join me in this adventure.
I only have time for one D&D game a week, and currently, I am running a Dragons of Neverwinter campaign (using a homebrew remix of the Dragon of Icespire Peak and follow-up adventures.) on Saturday afternoons. We've been playing every week, but after this coming Saturday (March 19th, 2022), we are going to be scaling back a bit, playing every other week due to the needs of one of the members of the group's time commitments changing. So starting on the weekend of March 26th and 27th, 2022 i will have time to join in with a new game of D&D for Call of the Netherdeep as long as it runs every other week as well. My availability times are mostly in the afternoon (pacific time) before dinner. (so nothing starting before Noon and nothing ending after 5 or 6 pm.) on Saturdays and Sundays.
Interesting storyline. reminded me of Elric Stormbringer from Michael Morcock's series. I never read the series just heard about it from a friend who loved the series. Stormbringer's sword also showed up in Dnd 2e, and is in DDO too. I like interesting character choices. I created a Goliath Alchemist Artificer who was raised by Rock Gnomes and had the personality of Buddy the Elf from the movie. Or Halfling Druids Moon druids that shapeshift into Cave Bears or something that sized during combat....
I'm sorry my new campaign doesn't fit into your requirements for Call of the Netherdeep or I would invite you to consider joining mine.
Good luck on your quest for gaming.

I'm retired with no schedule limitations. I'm an experienced player, but I'm still learning 5e Looking for a group that has a healthy mix of hack and slash and Roleplaying. enough RP to make it fun and different from MMORPGs and enough hacking and slashing to so I don't feel like a bought a bunch of dice just to have them collect dust.
