More than 6 players have expressed interest in joining so recruitment for the main team of PCs is currently closed. You may apply to join for a position in the reserve squad if you wish to obtain a spot if a player drops out, or just to observe the game to see if the PbP playstyle is right for you, and something that you wish to implement in your future games. I am also considering players to be guest PCs that can join for a short part of the adventure.
Game: D&D 5e Group preferred: Online PBP (play by post) Experience: New Location/Timezone: PDT (UTC/GMT - 7) Availability: This will be a PbP game so sessions will not be prescheduled. Expecting at least 1 post per day, prefer more if possible. We can do live text sessions on Discord if everyone is online and ready to go. Preferred role: DM, but I'm always good at being a player if things change. Game style: This will be module content, one setting source with a mini adventure (level 1-3), and one longer adventure (level 3 - 13). Expect roleplay when the setting calls for it, and combat when it makes sense. There will be no murderhoboing or loot goblins. If you attack an NPC, or steal from them with a low skill check, expect consequences. The world of Exandria has rules and laws.
Hello everyone, you can call me Viper, (go by He/Him). I am a relatively new DM/new player and have participated in a few 5E games, 2 of which are ongoing. I've run through a few levels of CoS (canceled due to party), am currently in a live game of Waterdeep: Dragon Heist, and am DMing a homebrew game of Tal'Dorei Campaign Setting Reborn.
The game will be play by post, so we will be using DnD Beyond for character creation, and Discord for chat. I will send images of the battle maps over Discord with battle tokens for enemies and the PCs. You will have to type out what you want to do/where you want to go, as there will be no control by the players for movement. I am willing to learn Avrae or other dice rolling functions from another person experienced with such systems, but if nobody knows how to use them, we will roll on DnD Beyond, and paste the results on Discord. We will be able to track rolls on DnD Beyond, so there will be no physical rolls. Only DM will be able to use "behind-the-screen" rolls for immersion.
The modules will have a need for roleplay and combat. I can homebrew certain items, story elements, and game mechanics in between but I am looking to follow the story. Each PC is welcome to make a rich backstory with up to two NPCs they might want to see in the world. I encourage a strong Session 0 where PCs can discuss where and how they might have met each other before starting their adventure. Other details such as hidden fears, ambitions, and personal quests, are welcome and will be covered in Session 0 with me. No edgy, pure evil characters unless discussed and cleared by the DM. I'm looking for an 18+ game. I haven't seen too many content warnings, but if you're uncomfortable with the following please let me know before starting:
Thalassophobia
Body horror (specifically the ruidium crystal protrusions and the corrupted monsters)
Potential PC corruption
Discussion of depression/loneliness
I'm looking to be the DM, but am always willing to switch roles with another player. I have a few content books (7-10) on DnD Beyond and content sharing available, but if any race/class is not available to you, let me know, and I'm willing to buy more content. The Call of the Netherdeep starts in an area (Xhorhas) with more monster type races (bugbear, duergar, goblin, hobgoblin, kobold, lizardfolk, minotaur, and orc), but Xhorhas is welcome to all standard races as well, as long as you can build a credible backstory. Wildemount has developed the invention of gunpowder and renaissance-type guns, so Gunslinger Fighter subclass and firearms found in the DMG are allowed. This is a story written by Matt Mercer and co-writers so if you don't like CR content, then please don't join. The point of the game is not to discuss CR, but if a PC wants to mention having known or heard of a season 1 or 2 character, that is allowed. Lastly, no use of hate speech and straight up being an ******* to other players. This will be LGBTQIA+ friendly, and there is no hate speech allowed including but not limited to ethnicity, disability, language, nationality, physical appearance, religion, gender identity, or sexual orientation. No sexual harassment and no sexual actions can be made against another player without their consent. Romance/flirtation roleplay and charisma checks are allowed in the game, and all final scenes are fade-to-black, but consent must be present.
The final roster will be for 5-6 players, and if we get more requests, there will be available slots for standby if a player(s) drop out. I am looking for at least 1 post per 12 hours, but missing 24 hours is OK, life happens. No posts past 72 hours will have the adventure move on without you, and if there is no direct communication with the rest of the players/DM, or a message sent explaining why, then there will be a permanent kick. If I'm missing some other information that you will need, please let me know. I will do my best to hold myself to the same standards. I'm trying out PbP because life is getting harder to stay in one spot for 2-3 hours, so I like the freedom that this playstyle gives us. Obviously, I will be attempting multiple posts a day (10+), and if everyone is online at the same time, then we could try for a few hours of live text.
Some background information on the modules, with more to be shared via Discord in session 0:
Unwelcome Spirits
An elder warlock from the goblinoid swamp village of Urzin has been kidnapped by soldiers of the Dwendalian Empire. Now the machinations of an evil imperial inquisitor might unleash an evil that could threaten the garrison at Fort Venture and the goblinoids of Urzin alike. “Unwelcome Spirits” is a Wildemount adventure that takes characters from 1st to 3rd level, and which introduces them to Wildemount’s desolate and foreboding Eastern Wynandir region.
Your players can create characters with ties to Urzin or nearby Xhorhasian settlements. Alternatively, characters from elsewhere might be traveling to Urzin, whether individually or as a group. Since this adventure ties directly to the Kryn Dynasty’s conflict with the Dwendalian Empire, you can also ask each player to consider their character’s stance on the war and how the war might tie into their background.
Call of the Netherdeep
Long ago, a war between gods of good and evil scoured the surface of the world of Exandria. Both the noble Prime Deities and the selfish Betrayer Gods imbued their mortal champions with supernatural gifts that granted them strength enough to challenge their divine foes. The greatest of these champions was Alyxian the Apotheon, who received the blessings of three Prime Deities to save the world from the apocalyptic power of the Betrayer Gods.
Centuries later, all knowledge of this godlike hero has been lost to time, and two groups of adventurers are called upon to retrace this mythic hero’s steps and free him from his timeless prison. The tale begins in lands familiar to Critical Role fans—the war-scarred wastes of Xhorhas and the glimmering oasis city of Ank’Harel—but ultimately stretches beyond the Material Plane to a realm of lightless despair known as the Netherdeep.
When applying please share a little about yourself:
Tabletop experience (including 5E): Do you like to play or DM? Your player style: http://dustin.*******.com/player-types Favorite race/class? Are you going to be using UA/homebrew? Any trigger warnings (can DM me this) Plot-driven or character-driven campaign? OK with intra-party conflict? Preferred campaign style: One-shot; short, focused campaign; epic save the world? Experience with Critical Role? Thoughts? Do you watch other DnD products on youtube/podcast? Favorite/least favorite character/campaign moment? Favorite/least favorite thing about TTRPG? Anything else I should know?
You don't have to answer each question, but a little background information will help me decide if this campaign is right for you. My goal is for the players to have fun. I don't DM in an adversarial manner. I'm there to put the story in front of you, and hopefully, you will enjoy it.
Tabletop experience (including 5E): I have played off and on for years and I'm familiar with 5E. Do you like to play or DM? Play. Your player style: I honestly don't know that I could name any one of these. I feel like I'm all of them at times and I don't think these cover all types of players. I'm more of a Storyteller than the others though. Favorite race/class? I don't have a favorite race (No ratfolk in 5E) but my favorite class is Wizard. Are you going to be using UA/homebrew? I don't believe I will be but I have not completely decided on what I would like to play. I would probably keep it within the critical role races. Any trigger warnings (can DM me this): No warnings of any kind. Plot-driven or character-driven campaign? Both? I'm okay with either direction. OK with intra-party conflict? Sure, if it makes sense within the confines of the story. Preferred campaign style: One-shot; short, focused campaign; epic save the world? Epic save the world. I'm in it for the long haul. Experience with Critical Role? Thoughts? Do you watch other DnD products on youtube/podcast? I have watched pieces of the first two seasons and I am currently caught up on the current season. I wouldn't say I'm an avid fan but I do enjoy the stories they tell. Favorite/least favorite character/campaign moment? ~ Favorite/least favorite thing about TTRPG? My favorite part of the game is it's ability to pull you into the worlds that are being created by the table. My least favorite is finding a consistent group. Anything else I should know? My name is Mike. Wulfrhic#0195 is my discord.
Just bumping to indicate that 2 other players have DM'd me to join as well. Waiting on 2-3 more interested players, then we can start setting up a group session 0.
