Strahd Von Zarovich is dead.
The murder of Ravenloft's most hated tyrant and first Dark Lord threatens to plunge the Demiplane of Dread further into darkness and despair than ever it has been. Set against a ticking clock and a multitude of horrors, can you solve the mysteries that threaten to doom every mortal that calls Ravenloft home, or will your choices only hasten their demise? Find out in this 5e limited campaign and push your characters to the limits of endurance, willpower and morality in a high-stakes race against time!
The King In Red is a 7-session campaign that takes place across the many Domains of Ravenloft, taking players on a grand tour across the Demiplane of Dread as they witness a pivotal chapter in its history. An all-out Gothic horror story that is not for the faint of heart, this campaign will see characters pitted against the very worst Ravenloft has to offer, and at times, merely surviving the terrors that dwell in the Mists will be a victory. Should they endure, however, those same characters may have the chance to leave their mark on Ravenloft's history for good, standing against the Dark Lords and the terrors at their command and leaving this dire world with a spark of hope, however slight it may be…
This game IS:
A genre-led horror experience, not just traditional high fantasy with uglier monsters. Expect dark themes, difficult choices (often between the lesser of two evils) and challenging foes, not all of whom are so easily dispatched with sword and spell. The ideal player/character for this game is one able to enjoy fright and challenge as much as victory, and value the narrative and themes of the game over 'winning' every encounter.
Gory, violent and grim. While I will of course respect any specific phobias and triggers that are flagged to me, and the feelings of any players at the table, part of the genre and atmosphere of this campaign requires heightened and description to be truly effective. If you are not comfortable with graphic violence and gore, threat, bad language or dark and intense themes, this is not the game for you.
Serious and earnest. There will be moments of levity and humour, as there are in any campaign, but this is not the game for joke characters, whimsical shenanigans or constant out-of-character quips that shatter the illusion of the setting. I am looking for players willing to stay in character, respect the setting and tone and embrace the trappings of the horror genre. Character 'voices' and acting are not mandatory, but strongly encouraged, and a commitment to roleplaying is essential.
This game is NOT:
An excuse for edgelord power fantasies. Yes, the setting is dark and inhabited by many devious and evil individuals, but that does not mean you get to bring a character that casually murders their way through the world or goes out of their way to make other players uncomfortable or annoyed. Ravenloft is best enjoyed as individuals fighting against the overwhelming darkness of the setting, rather than adding to it!
A sandbox game. While players will have a good deal of freedom in their actions, choices and experiences throughout the campaign, the structure of this campaign will present them with a narrative thread to follow, and good reason to do so. It is intended to be a fairly short campaign, and thus a certain amount of buy-in to the central premise will be required.
HOPELESS! While your characters will be beset by all manner of horrific creatures, dastardly villains and difficult scenarios, this is NOT an exercise in relentless misery. It is entirely possible to achieve victories both great and small, to kindle a spark of hope in a dark world, and to fight back against the evils that oppose you. I am not out to make players miserable or grind their characters into dust, simply to offer a level of challenge and darkness appropriate to the genre.
Games will take place over Google Meet video calls and a dedicated Discord server for chat, 'handouts' and out-of-game admin. Games will generally be 3-4 hours in length, and take place weekly at 4PM BST on Thursdays. Combat is run using printed maps and painted miniatures, visible over a top-down camera setup, and I will 3d print a custom miniature for your character before the campaign begins.
Sessions cost $10 per player per session, paid via Paypal. For the first session, you are free to pay after the session in case you do not get on with the game or style, future sessions will require payment before the game.
Please message me via DnDBeyond if you are interested in joining this campaign, let me know why you would like to take part in this game, and tell me a little about your prior DnD experience (new players are welcome, but may find this campaign is not representative of typical 5e games due to the structure and tone). After receiving your message, we will go through a quick interview process to make sure you are a good fit for the game, and go from there, with the aim of starting the campaign on Thursday 16th June. I look forward to hearing from you!
