TYPE**:
** FRANCHISE TYPES (in lieu of "Character Classes")
[These formats represent the style most identifiable with your product. "Franchise Types" give flavor to your presentation and present their own unique set of "Challenges" & "Events" during gameplay. It also helps determine Talent Trees and other specifications as the Game progresses. Federations *ARE ALLOWED* to multi-class, but every new class you add starts you at the bottom of that respective advancement. So while you may be a 10th level Franchise overall, you could only have the powers of a 5th Level Strong Style / 5th Level Sports territory for example] Each come with their own respective strengths & disadvantages as gameplay progresses.
The color scheme in the Territory Advancement Table indicates the Four Tiers of Play. These are general descriptions of how play experiences changes as Franchises gain levels.
In the first tier (levels 1-4), individual Territories are effectively apprentice Franchises. They are learning the features that define them as members of particular classes, including the major choices that flavor their class features as they advance. The shows they run are relatively minor, usually promoting in remote homesteads, local villages or distant Suburbs. No-name Backyard Feds to Construction-Paper advertising 15 fans into a local armory are good examples of First Tier play.
In the second tier (levels 5-10), Franchises come into their own. Their style is identifiable and their cast of characters is endearing (or repugnant depending on Reputation). Their promotional radius will contain Cities & Mid-level Arenas, and Casual Fans become more aware of their product. Real-world federations like TNA Impact, ROH and World Class Championship Wrestling from Dallas are good examples of Tier 2 play.
The third tier (levels 11-16) finds Franchises achieving a level of power that sets them high above the ordinary poplace. Regions and sometimes entire continents can play host to these territories. They enjoy Major arenas and sometimes even Dome or Stadium seating. Celebrity endorsement becomes more attainable, Reputation bonuses are higher and Mainstream fans will now take notice on occasion as well (for better or for worse). NJPW, Ted Turner's WCW and perhaps vintage-era NWA could fit this bill.
The Fourth Tier (and rarest to achieve: levels 17-20) is the pinnacle of Performance Art. The fate of the world or fundamental multiverse of Pro-Wrestling itself will rely on these outcomes. Reputation is at its highest (and most perilous), celebrity endorsements (and cross-over appearances) become common-place and merchandise is moving at the fastest ratio. You attract the biggest stars and sign the biggest checks. Real-world WWE is the only known example of this Tier. Will you be the next to join??
Salary cap rules are simple: Level 1 Franchises start with $25k to spend how they see fit building their roster. Every level you advance you receive $7500 towards your salary cap. So a level 5 Franchise has a total salary cap of $32,500. Franchises that make it to Level 10 will finally hit the $100k Salary Cap. Results from the Random Effects table may add/ or detract from your overall Salary Cap. You then purchase talent using these basic Salary guidelines (in event of a dispute, GameMaster has final ruling):
LEVEL 1 Talent [$0] Dark Match workers / local independent talent / unannounced matches / no-name jobbers [Basically any non-existent worker, backyard wrestler or fictional character - that's why they're "free"]
LEVEL 2 Talent [$500] Curtain-Jerker / show openers / Indy talent with some name recognition / No-major league runs [Anybody at your local Independent Show]
LEVEL 3 Talent [$1500] Mid-Card / Anywhere between 3rd to 5th match on a card / Indy talent with regional title wins / perhaps a small run as a jobber or ancillary character in a major league [Most commonly-found talent in the game. Most Mid-level to regional talent from modern day or history will fit these parameters]
LEVEL 4 Talent [$3000] Upper Mid-Card / Occasional Main Eventers / Major league secondary titleists (ex: IC or US titles) / devoted followings / merchandising / MOST CELEBRITIES fall into this category as well [Mr Perfect / Dolph Ziggler / Naito / Killer Kowalski / Rey Mysterio Jr / Hugh Jackman as show co-host etc...]
LEVEL 5 Talent [$10k] Perennial Main Eventers / Global Icons / Constantly in the title mix / featured in hot feuds and angles / Mainstream appeal / Merchandising bonanza [Austin / Rock / Thesz / Hogan / Cena / Sammartino etc...]
The goal of the game is to create unique and exciting Fantasy Match-Ups to drive up interest and increase viewership. Each card produced (no matter how big or small) has a corresponding chance to generate all-important buzz. Shows will be graded under 3 different categories by the Gamemaster:
Smarks (the only ones watching low-level Territories) Casual (always fickle but help get things trending in the right - or wrong - way) Mainstream (most elusive, sometimes most lucrative)
Each is graded on a scale of 1-5 (like a Dave Meltzer Star-system). The more shows you produce, the higher your cumulative ranking - which ultimately means more Experience Points overall (for level advancement). The higher ranking (IE: the better the show) the greater chance of Random Modifiers occuring as well. Grading criteria & common modifiers include:
In addition, every card has a chance of incurring a role on the Random Events charts (which are kept securely under lock and key behind the Gamemasters Screen). These Random Events can impact your Franchise in both positive and negative ways, and increase in frequency the higher your level. As the Notorious B.I.G. once said: "mo money mo problems". These tables (which I will not reveal in their entirety here) will include such things as:
"Management Dispute"
"Major Injury"
"Book/movie/dvd/merchandise tops chart"etc...
Everything is designed in a way to inspire & motivate your creative writing skills, but also to help simulate the chaos & uncertainty that can arise when undertaking LIVE projects of this nature.
GAME PLAY [From the original Mash-Up Wrestling rules]
* Performers drafted can come from any age/era/genre of pro wrestling - but MUST COMPETE in their real-life roles only. So Snooki, Muhammed Ali or Lawrence Taylor would be able to compete in at least one match for your company (because they all have) - but Obama, P-Diddy or Donald Trump could not (but they could appear as speech givers, mini-concert performers or ringside seconds like they did in real life). Know your history when you dabble with picks like these. Guys like Tito Ortiz and Rocky Marciano could not compete for you, but can appear as trouble-shooting enforcers and special referees (as they historically have). Rampage Jackson is NOT a pro wrestler and thus ineligible to be drafted as an active talent. But he can host a show or two for you. Dana White (UFC president) has NO history with pro wrestling thus nothing to do with this game.
* Every Territory owner can assign their own top champions and represent them as such. But there is only one true WORLD CHAMPION and he is shared freely amongst the community for booking purposes. The role of World Champion will be voted on by committee and majority rules. Think Ric Flair classic NWA champion touring the Territories and raising hell!
* No topic is forbidden, no actions taboo. But again - there must be a historical precedent to base your stories on. Hulk Hogan didn’t commit murder (that we know of)… but Orville Brown DID get into a career-ending car wreck. So don't write any murder mysteries about Hulk, but a tragic tale could be told of Orville. Male-on-women violence, profanity, drug use and sexual deviancy is all permitted (not exactly *encouraged*) as long as there remains that historical precedent to rest on. Use discretion and write your stories in good taste, but there will never be creative handcuffs placed upon you.
