While this doesn't help with the being able to get or login to such an account, not much I can do there, as for using Discord it doesn't require you to install anything, even the voice chat features do work from the web version if your using an up to date version of one of the major browsers. and like Deathangel said as long as you don't purposefully go looking weird weird stuff on discord or accept unknown invites it's not going to come find you.
as for the player limit I was thinking 9 people was going to be a lot, I've heard some work that way but most are only 4-5 people and yea that does make sense that the dm chooses the max players since they are the ones who are going to have to keep the game together and fix any problems so there can't be more players then the dm can handle. or it's just a matter of time until it explodes and everyone gets upset and leaves.
I would agree a VTT like roll20, Foundry, or something else makes the games a lot more fun, then a pure theater of the mind style game
And yea when I said I can help you I was thinking it was more of a technical, how do I set this up? sort of problem. you will need access to some social voice chat system. to play and it does appear that Darkangel is preferring to use discord for this.
