I am at a loss for what I have found in researching where to play DnD online. It's filled with paid advertisements about DMs being paid per entry, per game, per month, per hour, etc. etc. All I can think to myself is...
I never once got paid, or assumed I would ever get paid in playing a Game with people. It would be the equivalent of sitting down at a table to play, and asking passersby to join you but also give you money.
If you met in the streets, at a bar, out in public in general, or something of the like you would establish whether or not your group of newly christened friends would be the "chip in" sort or the "who can afford the 60$ books and 30$ bonus book materials" for just paper play only.
What I am getting at if you have read this far, where would I go as a person who wants to play, owns material, but cannot find a group? Where? Online articles lead me to believe that it's either Discord, here, or Roll20(which I cannot get to work half the time anymore) and I still have yet to find a game or group to be able to join. Can anyone point me in some direction?
Reddit has some communities for finding D&D groups. r/LFG being the most prominent of them all. People post on there all the time and they have a rule that you can't advertise paid games. If you want to play in a game, you just gotta browse and apply enough and you'll eventually get lucky. If you want to GM, you'll have players flocking to you like seagulls on a hotdog.
I started playing when I was 16(1980). Mostly DM'd. I was good at it. I knew my players well and made sure that there was a lot of laughter. 22 yrs later I taught my granddaughter. To this day she says at it was Magical so I guess I did my job well.
I've yet to find a group. Alas, I think that my post will remain here for those in the same boat as I.
If you find yourself amongst others in the same state as yourself you will find perhaps companions in our plight.
I am currently looking to play. I would DM...again...but I cannot bring myself to do that after my last campaign. A necromancer, warforged barbarian, and a very sneaky Elf Rogue ruined me. Nothing I threw at them worked. Every encounter was riddled with Legendary Actions being spent to counter act the crazy synergy they had, it was a rightfully fun mess every time.
If any find a group willing to allow a humble forever DM a seat as a player on Mondays or Tuesdays let me know. My schedule changes here on the 1st and I'll be working 7 overnights a week for a spell and my days will be fewer spent on myself it seems.
If you are willing to try a Westmarch system in dnd5e The realm beyond would welcome you! Here's a summary:
With more than 3 years of active gameplay, The Realm Beyond is once again looking for new players!
Our setting is inspired by Souls series games, with our own original lore. It's a dangerous world where your choices and actions have consequences for your own character and the setting itself. Tactical thinking and team play are crucial for survival! With the Westmarch system, you can join sessions whenever you want and level your character at your own pace along with our community.
We use voice chat and roll20 to play our sessions. With mature content, players should be 18+.
Although our sessions are considered hard on typical Dungeon and Dragon standards, we welcome players of all skill levels! (I myself started with 0 dnd experience on TRB 2 years ago).
Uff, sorry to hear your struggles! While I cannot offer a regular campaign, if you just want to hop into a game of any kind to roll dice and scratch the itch, we are looking to run one-shots every other week. If this interests you, feel free to friend/msg me on discord: lepin9fd. Monday nights @ 730 US East

I totally agree with your post 4 yrs ago and wonder if you got an answer,
I have ordering books and watching youtube videos for the past year but to no avail. I started playing in 1980 and just trying to join in again.
Looking for help.
