Game: D&D 5e Group type: Online (Discord, Beyond, Foundry Experience: A few years Location/Timezone: Central Time Schedule: Wednesday 7 to 9 pm Roles sought: Player Game style: We are on the casual end where we don't have a lot of time to play. Sometimes we go over to 9:30 pm. I have been a DM (5e Only so far) for a few years. I am still learning some stuff but really enjoy it. I enjoy building worlds and am not the kind of DM who will try to railroad you. I have historically run modules but am getting more comfortable with open-ended homebrew within the Forgotten Realms. I run the core and expanded rules without the MTG, Eberron, Planescape, or other outside additiona rule sets. We have tried to configure our sessions to keep a good pace and level consistently but not too quickly.
I currently have 2 players who show up every week like clockwork ready to participate and have fun. We like to be silly even though we are all grown adults 30+. When it comes to jokes we say anything goes as long as you aren't intentionally insulting or disrespecting a person at the table. Basic simple 'Golden Rule' stuff. Treat others as you want to be treated.
We had a player who dropped out suddenly and we really don't want to start a new game if we don't have to, however, we all are willing to have that conversation if necessary.
We are running a homebrew adventure in the Forgotten Realm Setting that is loosely based on Journeys Through The Radiant Citadel. We quickly decided we didn't exactly like the module so we spun our own narrative and changed it.
The Radiant Citadel is a city built on the bones of a long dead and massive creature wrapped around an equally massive 'Aural Diamond'. This city floats in The Ethereal Plane. The Radiant Citadel is a haven for refugees from different worlds. The quests are independent modules for different 'flavors' of cultures in DND. They just weren't interesting.
We decided that the Aural Diamond is losing its ability to protect the floating city. As it loses its energy, 'The Keening Gloom' invades; twisting, mutating, and killing all it touches.
My party started out as level 1 adventurers who were in the process of taking on their first quest when they came upon a small jar containing a crystal shard. Touching the shard warped them to different reality in the multiverse. In this new place, they undertook some adventures which led them to others who found crystal shards. Each new crystal shard found is fusing with the party's crystal and taking them to a new place. That was the catalyst for the adventure. After making it to The Radiant Citadel and meeting Mordenkainen, who is a powerful mage trying to restore the power of the Aural Diamond, he tasked the party with locating several other shards he has found in different places.
They are now level 8 and have been to many exciting places chasing down these shards. The collected shards are now the size of a small dagger as they fuse together and grow.
I have no idea how to ask for what I want here, because I am so laid back. Its a short list. I want players who enjoy joking and having fun while participating in the world I have laid out and the adventure at hand.
I know what I have seen that I didn't appreciate so I will list that instead:
You are a fellow DM and you want to be 'assistant DM' hoping to get special treatment.
You try to sneak homebrew into your character sheet and don't tell me.
You want to be the 'main character'.
You encourage other players to 'metagame' which includes sharing knowledge of monsters, locations, traps, Characters associated with our current game that you are familiar with but your character shouldn't be. For example: Oh watch out that is Yellow Mold, don't touch it! (In character you don't know what yellow mold is.) There IS a preferred way to handle that. Tell your partner that looks suspicious and we can roll for it. Sometimes the fun is letting your character fall into what predicaments they find themselves in simply because they weren't capable enough to avoid it.
I know as a DM I will make a call you don't agree with and hopefully we can talk about why you don't agree.
Do you know more about this topic than I do? I will consider that feedback and sometimes change the ruling. I am a cool DM that way.
This post surely makes it seem like I am high maintenance but we have a small group of nice people and I am hoping to protect them! XD
