Welcome to the Game of the Riders’ Tale. This campaign will invite the players to immersive roleplaying in a world of rich lore and grand exploration. The game will be challenging but fair; I want you to feel the thrill of combat and experience rewarding storytelling. The campaign synopsis is that the bad guys have won, and you will start in the last kingdom that defies the Riders’ rule. The players enter the contest to save the realm from their ultimate victory while discovering terrifying secrets in the greater scheme of things.
Campaign Introduction
The tide of war finally recedes from Promissia’s shores after the War of Key that scorched the land for over a decade ends. From it, the famed Riders of Apocalypse rise to power to establish a new world order: the Nillenian Alliance, a multinational council of kingdoms and free-states united under the singular vision of its founders: a world without kings.
Under the growing influence of the Riders, the people of the Promissia are forced to adapt to new ways of life. For some, it is the blooming democracy; for others, it is predatory capitalism. The rapid changes made in its feudal society bring an end to the era of adventurers and its romanticism. Heroes doff their armor to put on uniforms in quickly expanding industrial complexes.
Yet there stands a kingdom in last defiance of the Riders’ advances, for its throne once belonged to Atlas the Lion, the deceased nemesis of the dreaded Four. Albion followed its king to war without question, and they would pay his price for defeat. Their fate, like dwindling candlelight before the storm of turmoil, rests on the shoulders of the young men and women who would inherit a land that has gone into default.
And so Albion is in an economic crisis. Affording food, shelter, or even safety in this country is not an easy task for most commoners. Only the wealthy have power around here, and they abuse it with predatory intentions. The nobles suck the peasants dry with crushing taxation, and merchants import counterfeits into the realm on a daily basis.
It is rumored that an agent of the Riders will visit Albion to collect the debt they owe from the dead king. The realm is divided into two in their responses. Some wish to fight the foreign adversaries off their homeland and secure its freedom despite the overwhelming odds; the others simply desire to work with the enemy in order to establish eventual prosperity, even if it means sacrificing patriotic pride.
When all seems lost, the royal treasurer, Lord Roland of House Haymerch, devises a scheme that just might save the kingdom from completely falling into the enemies’ hands:
The Hero’s Game.
Lord Roland of House Haymerch, claims that the entry of a great dungeon beneath the royal palace has been excavated. Hordes of unspeakable horrors lurk within its ancient corridors, as well as boons of treasure to match for those who are brave enough to dare the challenge. Haymerch and the crown’s council promise the throne of Albion itself to the champion who clears the mysterious labyrinth.
Adventurer, will you prevail in this challenge and save Albion from the clutches of the Riders, or perish in their hands?
