Hello there. My name is Brom I am 29 years old (about to turn 30), he/him. I have been DMing exclusively for a while and I'm really missing playing as a player. This might be a longer post, I'm going to be a bit picky after having some bad luck with groups I've joined as a player in the past. Not to be rude, but if it's obvious you haven't read my post when you message me, I will ignore you. I WILL NOT join paid games, please don't even bother asking if you are a paid group (this is absolutely not negotiable, I don't have a lot of money and can't afford to pay for D&D). I'm looking for a group that plays Thursday evenings (9 PM EST or later), Monday evenings (7 pm or later EST) or Saturdays at any time, I'd prefer a 3 hour session, but would be okay with 4 hours, max. I'm looking for a group that uses AboveVTT (I can tolerate Roll20, but would much prefer to avoid it). I would prefer a group that allows rolling for stats, but I am okay with point buy (absolutely not down for standard array though). I would like a group that will be starting at level 3 or higher, I hate starting at level 1. I'm okay with 2024 content, but would prefer mostly 5e (In my own games I've been cherry-picking stuff from 2024). I'd love to join a game that is long-term and will likely go to level 20, but this isn't a deal breaker. I also want a group that is okay with homebrew content (not talking OP stuff, just regular balanced things that aren't official. I'd also be happy to share any/all of the homebrew monsters I've created for the DM to use if you like). Bonus, but not a deal breaker, I would love to find a DM that is open to someone playing 2 characters, I've had an idea for a dual character for a long time (like I'd play two entire characters with two separate sheets). I'm looking for high magic, high fantasy, I very much prefer to keep sci-fi and fantasy separate. Content wise, I'm pretty much fine with anything, but I love Gothic Horror, undead, gods, demons, celestials, necromancy, anything to do with the fey and the fey wild, the Underdark, and the Shadowfell. I would love a campaign that is fairly difficult combat wise, I have no issues with my characters dying. I don't mind some official content being banned, but I don't want to play in a campaign that bans a bunch of stuff. Also, I like rolling real dice, so I would very, very much prefer a DM that allows that (it's not a deal breaker, but I would really prefer to do this). I'd prefer not to join an in-progress group unless it's still early in the story, I really have a hard time getting into the story when I join halfway in.
A little about me as a player. I love RP, but it takes me a while to warm up to a new group, so I will be fairly quiet most likely at the start (for some reason I don't have this issue when I DM). I usually prefer to play magic users or gish builds. My favourite classes/subclasses are College of Tragedy Bard, Hexblade Warlock, Eloquence Bard, Bladesinger Wizard, and Eldritch Knight Fighter. I played 4e in high school about 15-16 years ago; I started playing 5e at the beginning of 2023, but I jumped in the deep end. I've played in several campaigns (as I said, I've had back luck with groups), and have DMed a few groups, and currently DM 2 campaigns. My characters tend to have a few traits that are universal to all of them: almost all of them have a scar across one eye, the ones that don't have a scar somewhere; they are always musicians; and they almost always have some sort of tragedy in their backstory. I am very ADHD (as is probably obvious by the scatterbrained nature of this post lol), but am good at keeping it reigned in and being quiet. I tend to use sarcasm a lot, but not in a mean way. I'm usually pretty chill and don't let things bother me. Other than the things I've outlined above, I'm pretty much down for anything. I'm definitely not a rules lawyer, I tend to play more towards the rule of cool when I DM.
That's all I can think of, but feel free to ask questions in the comments or by PM. Sorry it's such a long post, I just really want to join a group that doesn't fall apart or go crazy a couple months in.
I also want to state again, I WILL NOT join paid groups, if you are a paid DM, please don't even bother.
