Oblivra, the Land of Machine Hearts, is a continent of extremes, where endless frosted plains stretch beneath jagged mountains of black stone, dead forests of metal-infused timber clatter under icy winds, and rivers remain frozen most of the year while lakes glint with a metallic sheen from corroding ancient machinery. The pale, weak sun barely warms the land, leaving a permanent winter across the horizon, occasionally lit by electrical storms that pulse with unnatural auroras. At the heart of Oblivra’s survival lies the Machine Heart, a crystalline device integrated with living tissue that regulates warmth, circulation, and vital functions; over time, citizens succumb to the frost, their failing flesh replaced by prosthetics, gears, or mechanized limbs, until many families appear more machine than human, and some “hollowed” individuals are feared for their unmatched technomancy but questioned humanity. Technomancers and artificers are revered as engineers of survival, crafting heat cores embedded in lungs or clockwork limbs to replace frostbitten arms, while the nomadic Frostborne tribes avoid full integration with machinery, relying on augmented survival suits, cryo-resistant potions, and scavenged ruins, often mistrusted as reckless by settled technomancers. Cities cluster around geothermal vents, magitech reactors, or hidden warm springs, blending steel, frost, and stone in spires of iron rising above snow-packed streets, with markets trading body augmentations, frost-resistant elixirs, and salvaged tech. Magic and technology are inseparable in Oblivra: artifacts hum with frost energy, runes animate gears, and enchanted prosthetics can surpass lost flesh, while Heart Relics can preserve human consciousness entirely, granting immortality as a machine at the cost of emotion, memory, or morality.
A group of workers from all walks of life come together for a job: to transport a sleigh of Vitram, a fuel that, when infused with the right magic, makes their inventions run, from the capital Cindralith to the outpost Lumenspire. The individuals are experienced and have already had a great deal of personal adventures. Although life is hard in Oblivra, there is good money to be gained.
This is a campaign designed for more experienced players who are RP-focused and ready for a difficult campaign. I'm looking for people who really enjoy playing their characters and to have fun without getting too bogged down in the minutiae of 5e as a system. Minmaxing is not what we are looking for. Also, this will be a politics-free zone, welcome to anybody and everybody.
A little about me: I am a PhD student studying Cognitive Neuroscience. I have been playing D&D ever since I was a little kid and started DMing in high school. I love to read and write stories, more so when creating a story with others.
Details on the campaign:
Sessions will be around four hours, give or take, depending on how we are all feeling
Games will be played on Discord (voice) and D&D Beyond
Players will start at level 5 using any source published by wizards of the coast or on D&D Beyond with my approval.
Point Buy
Any classes or races can (and should be) rethemed to fit your dream character and the setting. An example would be a wizard whose spells are infused from a prosthetic arm that holds their spells instead of a book.
Each player will start with a magic item tailored to their backstory. The item will be rare(ish) in power. I encourage you to come up with your own homebrew idea that I can then code into D&D Beyond.
