This is a Dungeons & Dragons 5e (2024) game set in the heretofore unknown realm of Fairytale Land. You are a hero, about to embark on a unique, heroic journey to save the realm from the ultimate enemy: itself.
This is a satire game, set in a satire setting, and it is high magic. We will be ridding the land of Evil Wizards and Orcish Hordes and saving princesses and damsels in distress. Along the way, we'll be exploring the good, the bad, and the ugly of modern fantasy tropes. The adventure itself will be partially procedurally generated, and I will have spark tables to roll on for determining certain aspects of the game, such as town features, nearby dungeons, and adventures in the woods.
Gods will be referred to in the vaguest sense possible: their mechanical Domains, such as Tempest, Love, War, etc. If you end up needing to choose a god for your character, this will allow you to flavor and describe and name that god however you want. After all, one man's Zeus is another man's Jupiter.
If this all sounds interesting to you, read on!
Hello! Welcome to Fairytale Land. This is a pseudo-Medieval, vaguely Western European setting with all of the sunshine and none of the Plague. OUR humans are just normal people, except when they're the subject of Fate or prophecy--then they're King Arthur or otherwise Special. We have two seasons: beautiful, pastoral Summer and Everlasting, Deadly Winter.
Fairytale Land is extremely diverse thankyouverymuch: we have white, blonde Elves in the Enchanted Forest. They're deeply mysterious and magical. You can only go there if the world is in great Peril and only they can save it. In the Deep, Dark Forest we have Evil Women like hags and succubi and women who would rather remain single and child-free and have their own job and are perfectly fine on their own and also aren't into men. There is Halfling-town and Gnome-town and Dwarf-town. We also have a Token Desert and a Token Jungle ;) (Don't worry, they're across the Craggy Mountains. You don't have to go broaden your horizons unless you REAAALLY want to.)
The Forbidden Forest is bursting with creatures we definitely didn't appropriate, like centaurs and kitsune, and also creatures whose mythology we intimately understand, like unicorns and Sphinx (they're cool, so they're allowed across the mountains).
See that big, black tower with the fiery shape at the top? That's where the BBEG lives. No, it's not a flaming eye. That would be plagiarism and unoriginal. No, it's a flaming heart. It's incredibly symbolic and there are six volumes of deep lore you need to read to understand it. I should know, I wrote them in study hall in the 12th grade.
That was all sarcastic, but this part is real: this is a Dungeons & Dragons 5e (2024) game set in the heretofore unknown realm of Fairytale Land. You are a hero, about to embark on a unique, heroic journey of cosmic significance. You might even save a princess along the way.
