Myths are merely stories that have been twisted and turned over the ages. In ancient times, the lands that made up Ostifus were all united and ruled by Emperor Ostis. Revered for uniting the peoples of Ostifus, he rose as a hero who led a brotherhood of honorable warriors named The Muses. This band of brothers and sisters, at its peak, would number in the hundreds of thousands. They combated tyranny wherever it appeared and slowly gained the support of the inhabitants of the continent. Eventually, Ostis united all beings and consolidated them into the first Empire of Ostifus. He became their Emperor and brought an unprecedented era of peace, prosperity, and technological advancement. His reign lasted hundreds of years, and he had reached the pinnacle of his power. His empire had even discovered new lands and people to the east. He’d hoped to explore the world and discover even more lands so that he could free all living beings from the yoke of their overlords. However, this would not come to pass. There is one certainty that holds for all life: death. Ostis was succumbing to old age, and he could see his life force slipping away as he progressed throughout the years. He slowly descended into madness, never imagining how the world could continue without him. His work was unfinished; he still had much to accomplish and his people to lead. He began to investigate the secrets of life and death to find a solution to the one thing that stood in his way. After all, how was his empire to thrive and continue this golden age without him in attendance?
He read every holy scripture, every philosophical work, every piece of myth or lore on the matter of immortality. Yet he could not find a sliver of information to aid him in his search. He eventually concluded that the only way for him to escape death was for him to become death itself. In his last years, he secluded himself with a handful of his most trusted generals and advisors on the fortress island of Brimeseat. There, he ordered the construction of a tower that was said to reach up to the heavens. When it was finally completed, he took all those he trusted and sealed the island off to all others. It was on that fateful day when the empire fell.
Huge cracks began to form across the lands of Ostifus, which spewed out magnum and fiery balls that rained on the innocent common folk. Entire peoples, cultural groups, and landmasses were lost in this cataclysmic event. Sea monsters began to infest the waters around Ostifus, and the entire forest lost its life. Some races were almost entirely wiped out. The emperor and his court were never heard of again. The land around the fortress island of Brimeseat had become devoid of life and everything ceased to grow in the fields, leaving the landmass to be abandoned. Over thousands of years, the remaining people who survived became isolated from the other landmasses that once made up Ostifus. Unable to traverse these dangerous waters, the people began to unite and rebuild after years of darkness and death in isolation.
Unable to bypass the behemoths and leviathans that lurked under the salty waters of the depths. They were left to their own devices, secluded from the different branches of their empire. This story would pass to legend, and legend would pass to myth. The emperor became a nightmare parents would tell their children, a warning. A fable to teach their children what power can do to the greatest of beings. Slowly, the seas had calmed, and the great monsters that patrolled the waters around Ostifus became dormant. It has only been a few hundred years since the first seafaring ships were sent out. However, with this new freedom came an ever-glooming darkness. Along with sending out their fleets onto the open seas, strange things began happening to the lands closest to the newly deemed continent of Valich. First appearing as a taint, then as an invasion.
Strange ships, creatures, and peoples began to land on the old fractured landmasses of the empire. They began to patrol the waters just as the sea monsters of old. This force simply came with one demand: submit or perish. These are the first years of the age known as the Mortem Decadius. What will happen in the following age is still unknown, and the ever-changing fates of this world are a mystery. This is where your stories begin. This land is one full of mystery and division, where anything is possible. Will these lands revert to a dark age they’d spent the past millennium clawing their way out of? Or will there be a new golden age for these people and their lands? What will become of the world? The choice is yours, adventurers.
Mortem Decadius (The Age of Death)
In a bygone epoch of unparalleled progress, the mighty Emperor Ostis unified the fractured realms of Ostifus through a synthesis of martial might, deft diplomacy, and the mystic arts cultivated by the Brotherhood of Muses — an esoteric coalition of seers, warriors, and philosophers. Under his enlightened hegemony, civilization flourished, birthing new heights of arcane knowledge, scientific inquiry, and intercultural cohesion. However, beneath the empire’s radiant ascendancy, Ostis harbored a pathological fear of death.
Compelled by a desire to preserve his reign and legacy beyond mortal constraints, Ostis withdrew to the isolated volcanic stronghold of Brimeseat. There, he conducted blasphemous experiments in occult philosophy, necro-alchemy, and infernal contracts. His culminating ritual — an act of metaphysical hubris — rent the continent asunder: cataclysms engulfed cities, elemental chaos unshackled, and maritime beasts awoke from abyssal slumber. Ostis vanished from history, becoming both myth and cautionary tale.
Now, during Mortem Decadius, the Age of Death, the world begins its arduous recovery. With seas quelled and borders reopened, ancient hostilities and alliances resurface. A cryptic, otherworldly empire threatens subjugation. As dread festers, six heroes emerge — each bearing potential to alter the course of Ostifus itself
