What are your requirements for players? They seem like they must be pretty stringent, if you've gotten 13 applications to join, but apparently still keep needing one more player. Or maybe it's that applicants decline after hearing more about the campaign or its rules?

Is this a sandbox? Is it one or more official modules strung together? You say "gritty," does this use some homebrew/custom rules to create the gritty feel?

Is this a paid campaign? Or a free campaign which requires art commissioned by the "official campaign artist?"
