Hello! I am both a veteran player and DM, though I do DM far more than I play as a player. I often put a lot of effort in the games I DM for to connect players to the world through their characters, backstory, roles, and try to give some sort of character growth. That being said, I'm always looking to be a player in the same sense. I'm not a minmaxer (often the opposite) and I'm looking to connect a few of my character concepts to the world to make everything feel alive. This can be homebrew, if necessary, but I tend to build my characters around the official locations such as the Sword Coast, Greyhawk, etc., and I have a few character ideas that I think would do well for a game that's a bit more focused on roleplay and intrigue than just combat. They'll be fine in combat, too!
Anyhow, I can't commit any time to a game immediately, as I am DMing two games and playing in a third at the moment, but I am always looking for Discord groups of players and DMs that don't mind inviting new blood in to experience their groups and their dynamics. If you're part of a group that you think would serve that well, let me know! I'm willing to chitchat with whoever to tell more about myself if needed, but here are a few basics:
I'm 38 (I think? Who keeps track after 30 anyways, right?) and a veteran of the USMC of 14 years. I'm a full time student at the moment, but I can typically dedicate about 2-3 nights to D&D gaming a week. I am EST time zone, and I can work with games during the day or evenings, too, but I doubt there's a group of retired old grumpkins out there that want to do 10 A.M. games during the week. If you're interested to know anything else, feel free to ask or shoot me a Discord message.

Hey FloppyNacho — you honestly sound like exactly the kind of player who tends to thrive with us.
I help run The Nexus, an 18+ LGBTQAI+ friendly D&D 5e community built around long-term storytelling, character-driven play, and DMs who care about world cohesion and player impact. A lot of our DMs are forever-DMs themselves, so the mindset you’re describing will feel very familiar.
A few things that line up well with what you’re looking for:
Roleplay- and intrigue-forward games are common. Combat matters, but it’s rarely the only pillar.
We use a Westmarch-style structure, meaning multiple DMs run their own worlds inside one shared community. This makes it ideal for someone who can’t commit immediately but wants to:
Join a Discord of active DMs and players
Observe group dynamics
Slowly step into sessions when time opens up
You’re never locked into one campaign or table, which is great when you’re already DMing and playing elsewhere.
System details, for clarity:
D&D 5e (2014 ruleset) with all official content
18+ only
Global community (EST-friendly, with sessions running every day)
Start at level 3 using a 35-point buy
No level cap (PB capped at +10)
One-shots that feed into ongoing narratives, plus optional campaigns
D&D Beyond campaign links for content sharing
Play by Post / TRP options available, though live games are the focus
A lot of players join us exactly as you’re describing: not hunting for an immediate seat, but wanting a solid pool of thoughtful DMs and players to plug into when schedules allow.
