Have you been curious about trying Dungeons & Dragons, but unsure of where to start? Look no further! This one-shot (a single adventure played over only one session) is designed to introduce new players to the game, guide them through game play mechanics and rules, and most importantly: to have a fun time for all involved!
The Adventure: A classic tale of strangers coming together at a tavern, and rising up to a challenge that will see them take their first steps as heroes. You have come to the town of Therima in search of work for an adventurer, and have come across a job board posting that states ol' Glowkindle, tavern keeper of the Wizards Tower Brewery, is in need of a brave band to slay the rats in his cellar. However, the source of these beasties may yet hold bigger hazards....
The Dungeon Master (DM): I am ShieldWolf, and have been into D&D for the last 5 years, having played in a 3 year campaign as a player, and run a few one-shots and a current campaign as DM. Admittedly I am still a novice, but am eager to share my knowledge and love of the game to new prospective players!
Eligible Players: Sorry fellow veterans, this one is for the newbies only. My goal is to teach the fundamental basics of the game to those who have not experienced it before. My only other qualifier is that players be 21+ years old (game content will be PG-13 in nature, with no adult or controversial material, but I'd rather not be the reason someone is not doing their homework). I highly encourage prospective older players to join in particular, as I myself didn't get into this hobby until my 30's. Everyone who fits these two requisites is welcome at my table, and any form of discrimination or bigotry will result in being immediately banned from the game.
Platforms Used: We will be using a combination of Roll20 for battle maps and tokens, D&D Beyond for character sheets (I will also share access to the 5.5e Players Handbook, Dungeon Masters Guide, and Monster Manual there for you to peruse), and Discord for messaging and voice chat (no video).
Source Materials: For simplicity, I will only be allowing official content from the 5.5e core rule books (Players Handbook, Dungeon Masters Guide, and Monster Manual). Homebrew, third-party, and expansion content is not allowed. Players are not required to purchase anything as all relevant content can be found in the free Basic Rules available through Wizards of the Coast's website.
What to Expect:
1) Well before jumping straight into the game, we will have a Session Zero on May 23rd (1:00PM-4:00PM PDT) where we will discuss rules and expectations for the group, lines and veils regarding the content of the game, the process of how the game is played, and ideas for characters.
2) After Session Zero, I will schedule a time with you, one-on-one, to walk you through the character creation process on D&D Beyond.
3) We will play the game (finally)! May 30th Saturday from 1:00PM-6:00PM PDT (however that converts to your time zone). We will likely finish before the five hours are up, but I want to allow time so the game doesn't get rushed and players can enjoy. We will also take a brief 10-15 minute break halfway through.
4) Afterwards. I currently run an ongoing campaign, and am not looking for additional players or to start a second campaign. However, I will gladly give you some pointers on where you can seek out another game to join, or, if you're particularly brave, pointers on how to become a Dungeon Master to run your own!
Still Interested? Please send me a PM here, and we can discuss next steps.
