Tone: Lighthearted Campus Life meets Creeping Eldritch Dread
Welcome to Strixhaven University, a brilliant academy born from a rift in the Astral Plane. Master the arcane, join clubs, navigate campus romance, and manage your time with our custom 3-Token Activity System. But beware: a violent fracture is bleeding cosmic horror into the university, twisting even the legendary vaults of the library (Candlekeep adventures) into realms of eerie dread. The University opens into a sandbox style, allowing you as players to chose one-shot adventures within the campaign, and eventually even Spelljam into the Astral Plane (and beyond)!
Campaign Themes & Expectations
Collaborative Storytelling: This is a player-driven sandbox. Your choices directly shape the campus landscape and story direction.
Tonal Contrast: Expect a mix of lighthearted school drama, romance, and humour alongside darker themes and cosmic horror.
NPC Romance & Relationships: Romance and interpersonal drama are supported and encouraged via our activity system.
System/Scale: A "Mega Campaign" blending Strixhaven, Candlekeep Mysteries, custom modular adventures, and late-game Spelljammer exploration.
How to Apply
Please copy and answer the following questions in a reply below or via DM. Generic or incomplete applications will not be considered. This Thread will remain open until 3 to 4 players are found (currently have 1 player signed up).
1. Player Info & Basics
Name/Pronouns:
D&D 5e Experience:
Comfort with Dark Themes:
2. Playstyle & Vibe Checks
The Collaborative Sandbox: How do you feel when the DM hands the reins to the party and says, "What do you want to explore next?" How do you usually contribute to group decision-making?
Character & Romance: What is your comfort level with character-driven RP and romancing NPCs/developing deep ties with campus figures? What makes a character dynamic fun for you?
Genre Mashups: This campaign shifts from university hijinks to psychological cosmic dread, and eventually to high-concept space-faring adventures. How do you handle sharp tone shifts in a game?
3. Quick Scenario Challenge
Your character discovers a strange, pulsing anomaly in a secluded wing of the campus library. It seems linked to a missing student, but attending tonight's major campus festival is critical for your favorite club's standing. What is your character's immediate instinct, and how do you loop in another party member?
Name/Pronouns: Space (Any/All Prns) — I want to add I’m 20, not 21, I know 21 is the age limit but I wanted to submit an application anyway since I turn 21 in like half a year but obviously if the boundary is set in stone I get it!!
D&D 5e Experience: 3+ years, including both in-person and online campaigns
Comfort with Dark Themes: I’m cool with them!! Currently in a campaign where one of the main inspirations was the Outlast series so I’m pretty used to darker themes anyway LMAO, as long as it’s not all doom and gloom
2. Playstyle & Vibe Checks
The Collaborative Sandbox: I‘m gonna need completely honest I struggle a LOT with decision-making and get choice fatigue really quickly (I’m neurodivergent) so I’m pretty much always happy to just go along with what the rest of the party wants!
Character & Romance: I‘ve never done PC and PC romance before but I HAVE done PC and DMPC romance if that counts? Not entirely sure how I feel about PCxPC since I’ve never done it but anything else I’m pretty cool with as long as it’s discussed and preplanned, I don’t like random NPCs hitting on my characters. That being said I absolutely adore party dynamics and making relationships with the rest of the party and NPCs alike, be warned I get emotionally attached very quickly.
Genre Mashups: I‘m cool with it! As long as there’s time to blend into each tonal shift and it’s not just violent whiplash all the time where we can never settle.
3. Quick Scenario Challenge
(This could change depending on what sort of character I play, but I’ll just pick the first idea that comes to mind)
Adventure (and rescuing the missing student, of course) is far more important than the club. They’d explore this anomaly instead, likely convincing another party member from the same club to come with them (so they’re not the only one missing out) and hope that solving the anomaly and hopefully rescuing the missing student would give them far more school credit than the campus festival ever could.
Just for clarity, it is romancing NPCs. (Players always have full agency on their decisions)! There's always a session zero with me as a DM to talk more about veils/lines (or the X/O cards).
D&D 5e Experience: 0 gameplay experience, but I watch a lot of gameplays, my boyfriend is a DM so I won't have to bring all of my questions to you :)
Comfort with Dark Themes: No problem with dark themes, as long as no one is offended when i inevitably make jokes about the dark themes
2. Playstyle & Vibe Checks
The Collaborative Sandbox: HECK YEAH, I love roleplay heavy gameplay and have wanted to try a sandbox campaign. given that I don't have any experience playing I can guess how I am going to play but I don't really know
Character & Romance: yes please, again these are hard for me to answer as I haven't exactly found my playstyle yet but I love the idea of being able to romance an npc or at least try to XD
Genre Mashups: I think that is quite perfect for me, it allows me to explore multiple genres within one campaign, LOVE IT
3. Quick Scenario Challenge
Immediate instinct would be to pocket it, my character would bring it with me to the campus festival, tell my party members to meet me somewhere after and show it to them to discuss further plans, my hope would be that they may have found something similar or they have some level of insight that I don't.
LOL i reread it and can't tell if it is an object or the location itself. if its the location i will approach it and see what happens, try to collect information, and depending on outcome, bring available party member(s) to the location after the campus festival and try to explain what I saw if it's not still happening.
D&D 5e Experience: I have been playing D&D 5e for about 4 years now, so I have a bit of experience but not a whole lot!!
Comfort with Dark Themes: I have no problem with dark themes!!
2. Playstyle & Vibe Checks
The Collaborative Sandbox: I love when I get to help make a decision on what to do next. I love being able to choose where we go and how to take the story. I mostly get involved by offering my character's opinion on how they would handle the situation. If it's an above table conversation, I am also hands on when it comes to that.
Character & Romance: I absolutely love romance within my characters stories. I believe relationships of all kinds (romantic, friends, enemies, etc..) are extremely important to how a character might navigate their world. I think fun banter will always make a character dynamic fun for me. But also, being willing to work their way into the other's world if they are extremely closed off is my favorite dynamic. Someone who is able to break down the walls... it's awesome.
Genre Mashups: I can't say i've ever taken part in a campaign that has sharp tonal shifts, but I think i'm pretty adaptable, and look forward to what comes next.
3. Quick Scenario Challenge
My character's first instinct would probably be to make sure that touching the object wouldn't cause any bodily harm to anyone who may come in contact with it. If it is able to be picked up, they would pick it up, if not. They would warn all near to be careful in the area surrounding it. Before going to their party, explaining what they saw/showing what they saw. Deciding a game plan. If it is something that we would be able to handle, or if we should get faculty involved. Maybe it's above our pay grade, or maybe we want to **** around and find out. But, helping a missing student is of utmost importance.
(This could change depending on the character that I play though.)
D&D 5e Experience: On and off for about 10 years (heavy on the off part not because I don't like D&D just cause it's so hard to find a game haha)
Comfort with Dark Themes: Very comfortable exploring dark themes although I like to draw the line at explicit/descriptive SA
2. Playstyle & Vibe Checks
The Collaborative Sandbox: I (like many) enjoy having the freedom to choose exactly what to do next after all this is the kind of game that grants players the most freedom and being able to truly think in character what they'd want to do next helps a lot with decision making. When it comes to group decision making I find it important to find a balance of keeping the conversation tactful while also staying in character (the last thing you want is the party splitting up to do something else because "That's what my character would want to do").
Character & Romance: Funny enough in all my games I've never actually romanced with any of my characters (in the middle of starting one but the campaign ended before any real footing) but I do really like the idea of having your characters fall in love with another so I'd be more than willing to give it a shot. The kind of character dynamic from untrusting strangers to a true friend with loving comradery will always be the first thing that comes to mind when I think of a ideal character dynamic. The best example I can give of this is from the LOTR particularly the books withÉomer and Aragorn the two go from the start of their first meeting Éomer suspects them to be spies or perhaps enemies to battling side by side with each other in Helms Deep gaining the others trust, being reunited during the battle of Pelenoor Fields Aragorn being able to save his sister Éowyn to finally Aragorns ascension to High King of Gondor to which Éomer remarks his brotherly love for his friend and renews the alliance of old between Rohan and Gondor. (sorry for the rant love LOTR and thought it was the best example to give haha)
Genre Mashups: Very good question, although I admit I have yet to play in a game with varying concepts I've certainly played my share of games where the adventure is no longer considered happy go lucky and real decisions have real consequences following them so I'd say I handle tone shifts well in character and out of character.
3. Quick Scenario Challenge
(I presume we have phones or some sort of communication device) If I'm alone I'd immediately dial the number of a party member I trust most to come down to the library as soon as they can. I'd then shoot a quick text to the Fencing Club president that I'm not going to be able to make the festival but promise to make it up with whatever PT (physical training) they want to throw at me for next practice. Whilst sending that text I'd make my way to the front of the library and await the arrival of my fellow party member.
