Beyond the hearth lie forgotten kingdoms, the halls of ancient kings, and roads that lead into the unknown. Where will your fellowship wander, and what will you leave behind?
Hello, adventurers!
I'm recruiting players for Of Hope and Other Sorrows, a long-form campaign using Free League's The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying 5E.
Our adventure begins in Bree, in the twilight of the Third Age. Rumours from the North Downs speak of forgotten places, ancient treasures and troubles stirring in lands long haunted by the memory of Angmar.
But Bree is only the beginning.
A Middle-earth to explore
This is an open-world sandbox campaign drawing upon Free League's published Middle-earth adventures, regional supplements and lore, alongside original stories.
Rather than following a predetermined sequence of quests, your fellowship will choose which roads to travel, which mysteries to pursue and which causes deserve your help.
Perhaps you'll explore the ruined kingdoms of Arnor, venture into the depths of Khazad-dûm, seek counsel among the Elves or become caught in the ambitions of powerful lords and wizards.
Or perhaps your greatest adventure will begin with helping a stranger beside the road.
The world will continue to change around you, and the consequences of your decisions may be felt long after you've moved on.
What makes this campaign different?
A genuine sandbox: Your decisions guide the direction of the campaign, with interconnected locations, characters, mysteries and opportunities.
A living Middle-earth: The campaign shares its world with my established Thursday game, A Shadow Moves in the Dark. The two fellowships follow independent stories, but their discoveries and decisions may influence one another through rumours, letters and changes in the world.
Tolkien-grounded storytelling: Expect meaningful journeys, friendship, exploration, political intrigue, difficult choices and moments of wonder. Combat can be dangerous, but swords aren't always the answer.
Your character matters: Your background, ambitions and relationships help shape the story. We'll work together during an individual Session 0 to give your character a meaningful place in Middle-earth.
