Welcome to Rise of the Runelords, Paizo's acclaimed Pathfinder 1e Adventure Path adapted for D&D 5e.
Located on the largely untamed frontier of Varisia, the coastal town of Sandpoint has faced few trials and dangers over the course of its forty-two-year history. Unfortunately, that is all about to change.
Your characters will find themselves caught in a tangle of seemingly unconnected events centred around Sandpoint that gradually draw them into an epic conflict against a millennia-old evil seeking to reclaim the land it once ruled. The adventure will bring them face-to-face with hundreds of humanoid and monstrous foes. They will delve into Varisia’s ancient ruins, traverse its gloomy forests and climb the slopes of its rugged mountains to uncover the land’s dark history.
Fight strong against this rising darkness, for you may be the only thing keeping Varisia, and perhaps Golarion itself, safe from doom!
Godspeed, adventurers!
Rise of the Runelords is an epic fantasy adventure with darker, grittier undertones and horror elements. It's intended for 4 players, taking characters from level 1 to 15.
I’ve been a huge fan of Paizo’s Adventure Paths for a long time, particularly the older ones. Since 5e has a considerably larger player base than Pathfinder in general, especially compared to the older 1st edition, adapting these adventures felt like a great way to bring them to a wider audience giving people who don’t play Pathfinder a chance to enjoy them too.
That said, Golarion is quite different from the Forgotten Realms, Eberron or any other popular 5e setting, so I’ve had to make a number of adjustments to some rules and character options to better fit the tone and feel of the original campaign and the Pathfinder system.
The PHB 2024 options are available unchanged. Certain setting-specific backgrounds and feats from Heroes of Faerun and Arcana Unleashed, however, have required adaptation, mostly in flavour though.
In addition I’ve brought in some species that aren’t included in the 2024 edition, but might’ve appeared in earlier 5e books, with some Golarion-specific adjustments. I've also introduced some entirely new backgrounds, a handful of new mechanics and rules, magic items and various smaller things. Other options like spells, classes and subclasses from the aforementioned sourcebooks remain available without changes.
All these character options and rules changes have been compiled into a well-organised document for ease of reference, which I’ll share with you before character creation.
Speaking of character creation. We'll have a free Session Zero where we’ll do that, and also get to know each other a little better, and go over campaign and system-related details, so everyone's on the same page and prepared for the adventure.
